If the "far right" is gaining support and winning, maybe we need to redefine what is the political center.
A very precise example of right-wing understanding. The right-wing common-sense understanding is that Leftists must INTRODUCE problems where before there were none. But Leftists are almost an irrelevance in today's politics. And yet society continues to have problems, to have social conflicts etc. Even if every self-proclaimed Leftist died tomorrow, the social conflict would continue because it is not INTRODUCED from the outside (where before there was social harmony) it is inherent in this 'social harmony' itself.
Whether in American cities with section 8 where government deems it "fair" to fill working class neighborhoods with a bunch of poverty stricken welfare recipients with no idea how to change their behavior in order to assimilate into those neighborhoods or European cities which have millions of people from different cultures thrust upon them with no desire to assimilate, the left continues to tell us what is best for us. When we start to voice opposition to these policies, we're called "bigots" and "racists". People like you are the cause of discourse in these nations.
Although I'm flattered that you assume I am influential in shaping the 'discourse of a nation', we Leftists are a political irrelevance today. I think you are confusing Leftism with the 'big' politics of the status-quo. Politically-correct multi-culturalism is not a Leftist policy any more than it was a Leftist policy to bail out the banks in 2008. This is the politics of the liberal status-quo, the ideology that reproduces international capitalism in its current form. ie. free movement of labour and capital across the globe (but not everyone of course). That is to say, that capital can move freely across the world, and currently, labour has a freedom to fill in the jobs etc. in those countries where companies have fled in order to consume cheaper labour. Doesn't have to continue of course, which is where people like you come in.
In the early part of the 20th century 'nationalism' (far right wing xenophobic fascism) was the order of the day given to racial/cultural purity with anti-Semitism as a byproduct as the platform, today it is 'anti-immigration' (aka Islamophobia). Mix in weak economies, higher and/or less than satisfactory unemployment stats and an explosion in wealth & income inequality and we have a recipe for disaster. People will listen to a 'savior' who comes along telling them who to blame for their problems and that he / she is the only one who can solve them. This is happening in many places in the western industrialized world. I believe we have been asleep at the switch for about 36 years, we all bear some of the blame for this - those who engineered these problems and those of us who slept through it. A perfect climate is created for demagogues to step into and that is exactly what they are doing. The rise of a buffoon like Trump is exhibit A. These people scare me.....
We haven't been 'asleep for 36 years'. What has happened is that the Left has been killed off in the past few decades and so the space that it used to occupy in politics has been re-occupied by the Right. The fascism of the early 20th century had literally to physically smash the worker's movement before it was able to assume power in Central Europe. Today all that stands in the way of our new fascism is the politically-correct liberals who, when push comes to shove, will simply be unwilling or unable to stop the impending darkness.
