How did you get that our of my posts? Please quote it. I have an issue with loud mouth activists that pretend they represent more people then they do. If American Indians dont like the Redskins dont support them and certainly stop naming Highschool teams that. If you dont like something dont support it. Its quite simple. Its not up the the vast majority to cave in to a few people who are offended or pretend to be offended.

Where is George Carlin when you need him. He needs to change his seven dirty word joke now to include redskins.

"Unacceptable" or "illegal?" Because what's "acceptable" is merely a reflection of a society's current values, which change generation to generation... it's perfectly reasonable that a generation 82 years later would say that no, this term is not acceptable. It's the same reason we don't refer to blacks as "negros" or "colored folk" any more. Aside form that, no one is taking this guy's company away, they're just asking him to change the name of a sports team. They still get to run around in tights injuring themselves and losing games, as Snyder's team appears to spend all their time doing.

You're missing the point. The whole reason we have stupid laws like how loud you can play your music is that people were dicks. This principle extends into business, finance, driving - even into the sports arena itself. You can't bring a laser pointer to games now because a bunch of dicks had to go shining lasers in players' eyes on the field. If people would just act decently toward one another, then we wouldn't have to replace decency with asinine laws. I don't want the FCC to ban the word "Redskin" from the airwaves, but I also don't think it's a big deal for Dan Snyder to do the decent thing and change his team's name. It's not a religion, it's a business enterprise.

I believe because the first white explorers ( recorded) thought they reached some part of India.

Yes, it's a business enterprise -- which means name recognition translates to dollars. You're asking him to loose money. And I guess I do mean illegal, if we're legally excluding him from advertising his teams name on the airways or from protecting his trademark in a court of law.

I don't like the team name either. Were it me, I probably would have morphed that trademark over the years to something else... same way Coca-Cola became Coke or Apple Computer Inc. became Apple Inc. -- but it's not my business. And I don't think the right way to impose my opinion on his business is by abusing the power of public agencies.

If a companies (or an individuals) practices have a real world impact, whether that's preventing folks from sleeping or poisoning their water supply, then yes -- the community has a right and an obligation to resolve that issue. I'd even include in that exclusionary practices that create walls in our community, like the Greensboro lunch counter issue or segregated schools.

But if someone is only offended, that's not the same thing. If Big Dave puts up a confederate flag in his restaurant, if the Aunt Jemima or the Redskins logo offends you... speak with your dollars. Stop supporting that brand and invite others to join you. You got a right to free speech too. Either we'll find your opinion it shared by enough folks that things will change or we'll find it's not. And that's where it should end.

When government agencies start taking sides on the "what's offensive this season" debate... that ain't gonna end well.

Well, for some folks tradition means something. Washington DC, and the surrounding area, has enjoyed the tradition of the Redskins since 1937. I was born and raised in MD. I grew up on the Redskins. NEVER, NOT ONCE, EVER was it brought up as a disparaging term my entire life until now. Are we yielding to new traditions of growing political correctness and continued redefining of what is offensive, or are we becoming more ‘enlightened’ to what really is offensive?

I mean the term watermelon has been used to disparage blacks. Why aren’t we ridding ourselves of that word? But yet, we go to a roadside farmer’s market and ask for a watermelon and never give it a second thought.

A company is built on its name. Rarely do owners change their names because of the branding and recognition. But there is also a pride that goes into that name for the people of the community of that business. Tradition means something to these people. It means something to me. I have never viewed, nor will I ever view the term ‘Redskins’ – as in the name of the team – as offensive. It’s a name (like any other football team name) that takes so many Washingtonians back to their childhood of admiring these athletes, then going out into our own yards and fields, or joining the boy’s club, and playing our hearts out. There comes a point where folks have to get over themselves and just stop being offended by things that are never, and have never been meant to offend anyone. This is one of them.

I agree, so when the activist dicks stop acting stupid and being offended by everything, then we'll all get along.

Another thing to remember is that when Europeans started coming to the Americas, they generally viewed native Americans as animal like and non human. I honestly don't think the intent was malicious. I think it was old arrogance and they honestly thought of them as animal like not capable of making their own decisions. If you read some of the early journals from this period they discuss the natives as if the natives do not have the mental capacity to understand " civility" . This is why much of the early history is very skewed and should be taken with a huge grain of salt.

If anyone has not seen the South Park episode in this I highly recommend it, absolutely hilarious....

I also fine this absolutely ridiculous and just another freedom we are losing. There are so many things that are more offensive on TV and I have yet to meet ANYONE in person who wants this changed.

I hate government so, so much.....

and as we have learned, level of civility doesn't translate to mental capacity. We still have primitive tribes today and in the cases where people outside have contacted and interacted, they've all seemed rather intelligent, albeit living primitive lives.

I still get a kick out of the shows where these folks are living in the jungles, using spears and blow guns, but wearing nike sneakers. It's such a juxtaposition of culture you can't help but giggle like an idiot.

"Savages" was also a term used for Indians.

Either way, I've never once considered "Redskins" to be derogatory, or even wondered if it might be derogatory any more than anyone else would call me a "white" person or reference African-Americans as "black" people.

I think having an Indian head logo and calling the team "Washington Savages" would be derogatory. Redskins, not at all. We use color to describe races fairly frequently without animosity. Besides, "redskins" sounds better than "red people".

Oh? It's that simple? I can tell you are quite the activist. To your last point, it is up to the majority to ensure the protection of the minority. As James Madison said, "In republics, the great danger is that the majority may not sufficiently respect the rights of minority.” It is an American principle that the big dogs have a vested interest in the well-being of the little guys. Most big businesses and power centers have figured this out already. For whatever reason Snyder is being a stubborn ass.

So the name only became racist when Snyder bought the team?

Honestly if we were talking about "Big Dave's" restaurant on the corner then I'd concede the point, but with the NFL as ubiquitous as it is, simply not supporting the brand is hardly a recourse. I don't believe the FCC petition is really about using a government agency to take a side, it's about gaining visibility and piling on the public pressure for Snyder to stop being so stubborn. I agree that if the FCC chooses a side in this debate it will probably not go well in the long run, but I see petitioning the commission to look at it as a smart, strategic move by the out-funded, out-lawyered minority group.

Just because something has been a particular way for a long time doesn't make it right or acceptable.

How is altering history involved in this? History seems to validate the North American's claim.

    Exactly!

The episodes always out two political issues together, this one is the rise of "crowd funding" and the Redskins name.

Oh dear lord, could there ever be a more appropriate episode, I'm not sure....

Well that's fine, but when I grew up, "(*)(*)(*)" and "queer" were perfectly acceptable terms used for gay men, and straight men were simply known as "normal." Times change, and it's really no skin off my teeth stop using a word that other people find offensive.

No it isn't. Making fun of blacks for loving watermelons is used to disparage blacks, like the way we make fund of the Brits for loving tea and crumpets.

Are you kidding me??? Because (a) IT'S A FOOTBALL TEAM! It's not the location of a religious shrine or a pop-star's name, it's the team name given to a bunch of guys running around in tights piling on top of one another! And (b) professional sports do this stuff all the time! The Cleveland Browns moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens in 1996! Before that, the Baltimore Colts moved to Indianapolis and became the Indianapolis Colts... the Brooklyn Dodgers moved to L.A.... the Charlotte Hornets became the New Orleans Hornets, then the New Orleans Pelicans... the Kansas City Wizards became Sporting Kansas City... I could go on for pages with this stuff. Those owners all understood how little the name of the team really matters to their bottom line, what matters is running the team well. You know why the Redskins have a losing record? It's because Dan Snyder is an idiot, that's why! He can't run a team and he can't manage public relations. I think the crowd upset over the name "Redskins" should forget about the name and try to take down Snyder... Redskins fans would probably join them!

That selfishness is probably why you can't get it through your head that you don't get to decide what's offensive or not for other people.

It is not, in itself, racist, but it was used to insult Black people in the same way fat people liking food is a way to insult fat people.

But the Black thing is profoundly stupid because chicken and watermelon is a southern thing, not just Black's. And a lot of American's drunk tea as well, at the time. Some of the insults people use are just mindless...

Do you really think this is a new thing? I grew up in Wisconsin not very far from the Oneida Nation and Menominee reservation. I knew many Native Americans growing up and have heard about this most of my life. Just because it has been getting media attention the last ten years or so doesn't mean it is a new complaint.

Nonsense. It is time to strip this organization of its budget. The head of this organization needs to be fired. He is a fascist. He is a bully.
It is time to end all of these radical fascist organizations.

You realize that's tantamount to saying to any black person from 1865-1950, "if you're offended or if you've been wronged, you have every right to fight for redress, period."
