Okay, so here's my pitch: As a community, it can only help for us to be exposed to more information, more statistics, more moral arguments, etc. Especially those of the other side. I don't think we should pick only books from "our side" of the debate. After all, the best way to gain argumentative skills is to know your opponent. An increased knowledge of the other side helps you better critique them. The goal is to make this an even split across opinions. The pro-gunners, the anti-gunners: let's raise our knowledge together and see where it takes us!

I'm currently rereading More Guns, Less Crime by John R. Lott, Jr. http://www.amazon.com/More-Guns-Less-Crime-Understanding/dp/0226493660 I think it would make a perfect candidate for the first book in the series. I figure we should then vote on a second, anti-gun book - and we'll alternate between the sides with each book. Is anyone interested? We'd give everyone a week to get their hands on the book (kindle edition is available if needed). Thanks
I don't think any real knowledge will be helpful to the left. It's about feelings and dogma. Liberalism is really a religion and you would be attacking their gods by showing them the truth.
there is no city in America where gun laws got looser and crime went down...when during the same time period crime went down in other cities that had no changes to gun laws or the laws actually got stronger.
Sure Ron, there are plenty, that is unless you're talking about the cesspools dominated by Democrats and their supporters.
You'll have to define city, but many if not most of the towns in the vicinity of where I live have had no increase in violent crime whatsoever. However, there aren't many Democrats there either. We're not talking Chicago, Gary, Camden, Philly, E. St. Louis etc.
Sounds like you ought to join the reading club - this book goes over dozens of examples like that: the many states where there hasn't been a single instance of a CCW permitted individual committing a felony with their firearm, rates of people defending themselves with a firearm, etc. Join the reading club and let's find out together I'd appreciate it if you didn't continually try to derail my thread into just another debate on gun control. This is about the book club. If we get this thing going we'll be discussing and debating chapter by chapter. Are you in? Are you willing to put your money where your mouth is?
Them kind of books are just someones opinions and their facts they want seen. Why is that different from any other debate.
How can you pretend to know that? No links and no references. It's just you, telling us what you wish were true. I'll give you two little things to check on, and tell me what the results are: 1.) Arizona has adopted "Constitutional carry", which is certainly a loosening of the law. Residents don't have to have a CCW to carry concealed, and they can carry openly if they choose. 2.) Here in Clark Co., NV, they've done away with the "blue card", which was defacto registration. Has it resulted in rivers of blood? BTW- Nevada is already open carry. Exclude the violence that CA. brings to us, and we are very safe. I agree with the OP. You can make any claim you want to, as long as it is based on fact that others can refer to. I'm not personally inclined to engage in this reading club, because my free time is more dedicated to actually going about the many little details of shooting and reloading. Beyond that, I waste far too much time in things like web forums.
