Trayvon Martin getting murdered was a hoax. I think generally speaking it's not to do anything in particular except for get ratings because televised news is an entertainment industry.

But an unintended consequence of this entertainment industry seeking out the stories that get the most eyeballs watching it, is the manipulation of people who are victims of self-fulfilling prophecies.

Basically but if someone is an underachiever and they see the news talking about how bad lead people that share some characteristic with them are treated then they will grab onto that and pretend like they are victims of the same thing and use that to explain why they are under achievers.
