This guy would be a fantastic choice. Blunt spoken military leader. Military blogs by service people are ecstatic that he is being considered. Would be another "drain the swamp" type appointment and would be hostile to Obama's political generals who were more interested in promoting political correctness than the war fighting capabilities of the armed forces.

Secretary of defense has to be out of the military for 7 years before becoming, well, secretary of defense.

    Mattis has not.

I think that would be absolutely awesome!

“I’m going to plead with you, do not cross us. Because if you do, the survivors will write about what we do here for 10,000 years.”

“I don’t lose any sleep at night over the potential for failure. I cannot even spell the word.”

“You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn’t wear a veil. You know, guys like that ain’t got no manhood left anyway. So it’s a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them. Actually it’s quite fun to fight them, you know. It’s a hell of a hoot. It’s fun to shoot some people. I’ll be right up there with you. I like brawling.”

"For the mission's sake, for our country's sake, and the sake of the men who carried the Division's colors in past battles — carry out your mission and keep your honor clean. Demonstrate to the world there is 'No Better Friend — No Worse Enemy' than a US Marine.

"I come in peace. I didn't bring artillery. But I’m pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you f--- with me, I’ll kill you all."

Exactly right. Boy you really keep up!

I wouldn't mind Allen West in there either. He knows how to take care of his soldiers.

General Mattis could very well be a great SecofDef but I have not seen any drain the swamp from Trump other than hus words and promises. His promises are about as good as the ones he made to the poor shells who signed up for Trump NottaUnivercity.

Trump promises to drain the swamp but had not distanced himself from his business interests.

Mattis meeting with Trump could be about Trump reinstating Gen. Mattis and returning Mattis back to active duty ?

Remember that Gen. Mattis was purged and fired from the Marine Corps by the Obama White House for political reasons, Mattis was a warrior not a pantywaist PC yes man.

On the surface, the provision that active military persons cant lead the military makes sense on a ideological level as far as civilians controlling the military to maintain democracy.

But at the end of the day its unavoidable that the best qualified person to be SecDef is going to be current or ex-military.

I'm guessing the seven year statue was written to compromise the practical vs the ideological.

But it also stands to reason that it should be flexible for the sake of getting the best person to do the job.

I suppose President Trump could just use his pen & phone to circumvent Congress.

Would you see a problem with him doing that?

Well as Obama told us, in no uncertain terms, the President's "pen & phone" is for circumventing Congress and the law in order to in enact the President's will.

So if Obama was telling the truth about that, then this seven year provision really doesn't matter because President Trump can just sign a piece of paper overriding the law and to hell with any Congressional opinion.

And of course this would theoretically apply to pretty much everything President Trump wants to do.

I mean the President has his "pen & phone" ...what do we have? ...the Constitution? ...pfff...

Well this was the problem with the "pen & phone" tyranny that Obama started.

I tried to warn as many Left minded people as I could to the fact that Obama was not always going to be President.

Its Trump's pen & phone now and what he does with it will shape what the next President gets to do with it just as the lawless reign of Obama shaped it for him.

This is the scary part of setting precedent.

People, Democrat voters, should have exercised some of that superior intelligence they're always talking about and foreseen the very obvious consequences of Obama setting such a dangerous precedent with his expansion of Executive powers well beyond their natural scope.

Now we all have to live with this.

Regarding Afgh, I could hardly believe my ears when I heard Obama say on TV a while back- "Our aim in Afghanistan is not to defeat the Taliban, but to contain them and prevent them spreading their influence".
There you have it folks, a President who didn't want to defeat the enemy!

I prefer Gen. MacArthur's view- "It is fatal to enter any war without the will to win it"
