I would suggest you start hanging around HF Boards, at www.hfboards.hockeysfuture.com . I haven't spent much time there in recent years, but that used to be my internet home back in the day, and whatever you can't learn about hockey at HF probably can't be learned. I'd recommend starting with the "Rink" forum; that's where a lot of younger players ask questions of older, more experienced players, and we were always very welcoming there of people new to the sport. Lots pf people use that sub-forum to ask questions about rules, strategies, terminology, and all the little ins and outs that you can only get from people who play the game and really love it.

Like I say, I haven't hung there in quite a while, but it always used to be a terrific group of guys, and I'm sure that hasn't really changed much. If you just introduce yourself as someone new to the game who's interested in learning more, I'm sure they'll be glad to have you onboard. Enjoy yourself, and welcome to the absolute greatest game on the planet.

Edit: Whatever you do, don't tease Gee Wally about his age. Dinosaurs are apparently very short-termpered.

Oh, and one more thing - when you're on their home page, go to the menu bar on the upper right. See an option for "forum jump?" Mouse over that, and you get a dropdown. From the dropdown, select "The Lounge." That's a great place to just chill and make friends. The people you befriend there will break the ice for you (no pun intended) in the hockey forums. It's one of the better discussion boards I've ever seen - very intelligent, witty, knowledgeable posters - but be careful not to ruffle too many feathers until you get a good sense of the social norms there. They're not mean-spirited at all, but they tend to be a little aggressive with the verbal jousting, in a typical jock way.

Learn your zones and the responsiblity of your position. As a new player you will probably play wing.

It will take a long time to develop good skills. But as long as you know where to be your teammates will tolerate you.

And one thing I would add to that is that your teammates will help you learn. They won't have time to take you by the hand and lead you from one spot to the next, but if they see you out of position, they'll usually let you know about it. They don't want to have to chase your guy all the way to the other end of the rink if you get caught on the wrong side of the ice. Just be alert and listen to them; if they shout and point, jump. Other players will usually look out for you as much as they're able to, as long as they don't have to do it too often. They'll appreciate a fast learner.

here's a source of intro info.

    http://www.thehockeysource.tv/how-to-play-ice-hockey.html

here's a better one with videos of techniques etc.
    http://icehockey.isport.com/icehockey-videos/learn-to-play-hockey/

and here's another good site. If you scroll down about 3 quarters of the page they have a great diagram called the hockey cheatsheet that gives you a diagram of the rink and tips on what to do and where to go on the ice. Its really pretty good to get a feel of positional play.
