Not the conversion itself is expensive, as you claim, but the life in certain Orthodox communities, according to the opinion piece in the Forward and the articles linked. The life of converts is much simpler in other communities, like Chabad, but we have to read the first linked article to learn that.

There are many flavors of Orthodox Judaism, and there are also the Reform and Conservative Jews. The Forward article leads readers - those not familiar with Jewish life - to believe there's only one big expensive unhappy Orthodox option out there for converts. False. Also, a one sided article, with only the converts' stories, no right to reply given to members of the Orthodox communities themselves.
