I just called my bank to discuss my debit card and related matters. The nice lady asked my card number. Then she asked my birthdate. Then she asked for the FIRST 5 NUMBERS of my SS number. I said "wait a minute! Everyone else asks for the last 4. What's this request for the first 5 about?" She replied that...... now get this..... that Social Security has noticed that everyone asks for the last 4 and as a result most scammers have your last 4 and identify you by them and con you into trusting them because they have the last 4, .... SO, Social Security, in their infinite wisdom, has decided to end that practice and tell all businesses to cease and desist in asking for the last 4, AND INSTEAD, WILL NOW ASK FOR THE FIRST 5 NUMBERS OF YOUR SS NUMBER!!!!!! What could possibly go wrong? I'm sure the scammers will be stymied.
Social security numbers were never meant to be used as an identification number. When introduced they even printed on it “For Social Security and Tax Purposes — NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION”. It is a very easily guessed and broken form of ID — we need a national ID system.
I can't find anything on this. My bank still asks for the last 4. (And my pets name and the street I grew up on)
I can't find anything on this change. Kinda wierd too... aren't the first five #'s issued by where you were born? Seems like that would be easier for scammers to figure out.
But that’s racist. National ID In order to get it you would need a birth certificate or SS# and other proof you are who you are. Some people can’t do that so.......raaaaaacciiiiiiiissssssstt!
Don’t worry it won’t be too much longer before you’ll have to submit a stool sample for identification. Then a few months after that we’ll have a new type of criminal referred to as a turd burglar.
Besides my bank asking for the last 4 they also ask who I lost my virginity to and for the life of me I can never remember that priest’s name.
This was zero legitimacy in this call. Actually, it's very likely this call was with a scammer. Congratulations! Besides, getting a large list of social security numbers is probably $40 or $50, in a database. What is amazing there was an even better list of actual credit card numbers with associated information. He charged over 6 million dollars of charges, by charging $20 with odd amounts.
Answers about Identification Can the bank require me to provide my Social Security number? Yes. A bank is required to obtain an identification number for several kinds of transactions: When opening a new account For monetary (deposit and loan) transactions When reporting the interest earned on deposit accounts to the IRS For a U.S. citizen, a taxpayer identification number is defined as the individual's Social Security number or employer identification number. August 2017 https://www.helpwithmybank.gov/get-...tion/faq-bank-accounts-identification-04.html My rule of thumb about giving out social security numbers. If you initiate a call, cause (a process or action) to begin and a bank asks for Social security Numbers, either all or partial, it's likely going to be a legitimate and legal request. If anyone calls you and asks for your social security number, hang up immediately. Banks or credit card companies will never call you. Banks, IRS or SSA might send you a letter but they won't initiate a call.

If private companies like banks were so much better, wouldn't they be able to come up with ways to identify customers without relying on government-run (and funded) infrastructure? Maybe we're all as bad as each other at all this?
Thanks for this alert, not only does it show true incompetence(which it does), but it helps to inform your fellow citizens about an important development in our country that might otherwise not have gotten the attention.
In order to understand Identity Theft we need to know why anyone wants your SSN#. Your SSN# is key to your CREDIT RATING and your AVAILABLE CREDIT! That is what has value to those with nefarious intentions. With your SSN# and Credit Rating they can obtain credit cards in your name and thus steal from you via your available credit. Monitoring your own credit activity is what matters here. Report anything suspicious immediately and be vigilant as far as who you allow to access it. If you are in the market for a new vehicle do NOT use the dealership to arrange financing because then they will obtain access to your SSN# and credit rating. Instead go to your own bank and arrange the financing yourself which will save you the dealership fees and commissions as well. Better yet use a Community Bank because you will get better loan rates. Yes, dealing with banks can be a PITA but if you want to protect yourself remember that it is your own responsibility to monitor your credit activity.
I would also add that all three credit bureau companies allow you to freeze your credit. Basically no one can access your credit report or try to open up any new credit requiring credit report history
