Do You Support Gun Purchases without Background Checks?

This is not a Sandy Hook thread. It has nothing to do with Sandy Hook, because it's not how young Mr. Lanza acquired the firearms used in the CT shooting. This is a stand-alone inquiry into the opinions & beliefs of people like yourself. Feel free to take part in the poll, and please... explain why you believe what you believe. Thanks.

I support no background checks because people can get a charge so easily these days, and that will infringe upon their second amendment rights from then on.

For example, a bar fight or DWI would be enough to prevent a gun purchase and many people have one of those charges.

A drunken bar brawl that results in a felony conviction, is in no way indicative that the purchaser would be a violent gun owner.

The 2nd Amendment still applies to background checks: if you found our he was a criminal or mentally unstable the government couldn't restrict the purchase anyway.

Additionally, it's an invasion of privacy to go around searching into people's records. Imagine the uproar if abortion required a background check. There used to be the notion that if you've served your time then you're an equal citizen again. It's sad to see that this has gone.

Oh, and more person to person exchange is exactly what the United States needs right now.

I don't recall a DWI being on the felony list, and aren't sure that would prevent legal gun purchase. I don't know every state reg, so pardon me.

I think that's arguable & situation-dependant. I certainly don't believe that the chance hasty charge should mean that all felons should be free to take advantage of no background check outlets.

Well, I think that'd be a legitimate uproar. How would a background check even be used for an abortion? If you have a criminal history, you're not allowed to get one? Weird.

There's been a lot of talk about the gun show loop hole, but has anyone demonstrated that weapons purchased in this manner are responsible for more deaths than guns stolen or purchased on the black market?

If you've gone for dozens of abortions it will show up? Social Conservatives are always going on about how the government should stop women who use it as birth control. My point is that if a check is required to access something that's a guaranteed freedom then people would quite rightly get pissed. I don't see much of a difference with guns. Why should you have to do something for a government to access a freedom. Not really a freedom then is it?

Also, background checks take time. That time that the person is without his/her gun is unjust.

Do we need to for thread purposes? Do you agree with checkless purchases or not?

So, you would support a murderer gaining access to a firearm... because a background check dismisses his/her freedom.

no evidence yet for that inquiry but background checks shouldn't necessarily prevent gun crimes, felons already paid their debt to society and shouldn't have their constitutional rights revoked as they presently are.

now illegal gun owners whom commit most of the crimes, background checks wouldn't apply

depends.... just because someone went to jail for maybe drunk driving or something minor doesnt mean they should be barred from getting a gun.

at the same time im not sure if a repeated armed robber should be allowed to purchase guns since we obviously know what they are going to be used for

Funny but in that picture, any gun you see would go through a federal background check if sold. Want to know why?

you don't think drunken brawlers are violent?...anyone who gets violent after drinking should be high on the list for being refused a gun...

I would prefer for a endorsement or other symbol being added on drivers license or other state issued ID. That would allow for a instant way for a private seller to tell if a purchaser was allowed to own a firearm. It could also be used by police to tell if someone in possession of a firearm was legally able to do so. It is already done to help prevent minors from being able to buy alcohol or cigarettes.

I am not really strongly against background checks. I just do not think they will do much good. We cannot even stop criminals from obtaining illegal drugs - drugs which are illegal to even manufacture. What makes us think we can stop them from obtaining guns?

also, just because 1 criminal got caught for shoplifting 20 years earlier and served his time, doesnt mean he should be barred from having a gun and doesnt mean he looses the right to effectively defend himself

As the OP states, NICS has stopped some 1.8 million criminals from obtaining firearms, which at least proves that we can prevent legal purchase. Illegal purchase is a different animal for a different debate, and that's important to remember. Nothing about people buying guns illegally means that we should cease prevention methods that have worked. I'm actually of the opinion that a catastrophe committed via legal means is far worse than one enabled by an illegal gun purchase... and for good reason. Knowing Joe Psycho got his gun legally at some gun show that didn't require the background check (that would've at least made his wishes that much more difficult) is extremely troubling.

Yea, I don't think shoplifting is a felony.

if somebody breaks a chair over your back, that's a pretty good reason to punch them in the face.

i'm happy with my states laws as they stand, federally i'd like to see trigger locks (or some other disabling method) mandatory for weapons not in the immediate possession of their owner. need to put your M-16 or AK knock off in your storage unit for a few months? no problem, just pull out the bolt and separate it.
