i was just wondering... has the united states government ever lied to its public? have they ever lied about anything? and if so...how many times?
President McKinley told the American people that the USS Maine had been sunk in Havana Harbor by a Spanish mine. The American people, outraged by this apparent unprovoked attack, supported the Spanish American War. The Captain of the USS Maine had insisted the ship was sunk by a coal bin explosion, investigations after the war proved that such had indeed been the case. There had been no mine. http://whatreallyhappened.com/WRHARTICLES/lieofthecentury.php http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Maine_(ACR-1)
The Tonkin Gulf Resolution was based on a lie, later confirmed to be a lie. WMD's in Iraq was a lie, not a mistake. Hans Blix was telling us we were making a terrible mistake while he had his boots on the ground. We can fill this thread with examples, if we are honest with ourselves.
And of course the biggest and most recent deliberate lie was the claim that you needed to get into Afghanistan to fight Al Qaeda .
Can't really see the point when we all know that it is a huge number and that some of those lies have been big enough to change geo political boundaries . Perhaps extreme , but would you ask Hitler to accurately number the Jews he killed rather than just label him monster genocide man .
To think the US government never lied to the people is the same as saying that churches don't attract pedophiles.
Not a clever remark , Clint . The likely fact that many Pedophiles are attracted to "the Church" does not make it logically true or acceptable to suggest the opposite -- that the Church attracts them in any deliberate way . Think these things through first , Clint . P.S. I carry no brief for the Church . I just like facts and fairness .
