And a wonderful 8th of October to all of you!

I've been considering a new forum home and thought I would check out PF to see whether it fits or not...

To my person: I'm pretty darned mild-mannered, have a great love of math and science in general, am a family man, a person who believes in an undeniable higher power (G-d), also a person with views that run the gamut from hard-left on some topics to moderate-right on others, with a smidge of libertarianism on the side. So, don't try to pidgeon-hole me, it won't work.

For people of good will who actually like to debate in a civil way, I am all ears and like to make new acquaintances. For trolls and data-miners, I have no time, but rather, my handy-dandy Q36-Ilonium-Space-Modulator:

Willkommen!

I question the higher power you claim to believe in and reject your abuse of the word "god". Even if it existed, why treat the English word god like a name and then pretend not to know the vowel sound it contains? I view this practice as a form of self-enforced mental conditioning meant to coerce yourself to believe in something that is quite obviously unreal.

In Judiasm, there is a reason why we do not completely write the word "G-d" - it is not a sign of disrespect. In fact, it is the very opposite. I hope that information helped you.

Not exactly the warm welcome I hoped to receive in one case, but at least I learned that apparently, one word can cause an avalanche of feelings among some people. Good thing that I didn't write "42"!!!

lol...

I'm aware of that. It's a strange practice, one that apparently stems from an ancient superstitious notion that knowing a being's name would give you some kind of power over that being. It would be kind of funny if you used "He Who Must Not Be Named" instead :D

I assume you are joking and that was meant in jest, because, uhm, no. That is not the reason at all. That is pure bunk. Halakhah (Jewish Law) says that the name of G-d may not be erased or destroyed (Deuteronomy 12:3). By not completing the name, should an artifact bearing the name of G-d accidentally be destroyed or erased, the law will therefore not be broken. More devout Jews also sometimes add the argument that the real name of G-d is so pure, so beyond our ability to comprehend, that writing the name in full therefore dirties the name somewhat. I do not share that view. And some Jews believe that the commandment only refers to the orginal Aramaic/Hebrew names for G-d. You will see this abrogated spelling of the most high in many languages and in each, a vowel (sometimes, 2) will be missing.

But the comment you made is, with all respect, about as far off base as it can get and I suspect that it came from an uninformed, jew-hating website somewhere. So, your "apparently" means absolutely nothing. Because we Jews in no way claim to have powers over G-d. That is simply ridiculous.

But should you wish to honestly inform yourself, here is an ok starting point:

http://www.jewfaq.org/name.htm

Thanks for the warm welcome to PF.

Deuteronomy was not talking about English words, and god or God is just that. It doesn't refer (necessarily) to your god.

"And some Jews believe that the commandment only refers to the orginal Aramaic/Hebrew names for G-d."

^ These Jews are right, at least about this particular matter.

Fascinating. You have a most interesting way of greeting people in just such a friendly fashion, you know...

NOT.

How do you know exactly WHO my "G-d" is? Are you insinuating that the G-d of Avraham, Yitzkhak and Yaakov is no longer the G-d of the Jews, and by logical extension, of Christians as well? Really?

Thank you very much for adding to my amusement today. Sometimes, people just say the darndest things...

Negatory, that is not what I mean to insinuate. I am not a Christian... I am simply indicating that "god" is not a Hebrew or Aramaic word, and it most certainly is not a name for your god, no matter whether it's also Abraham's god. Hence there really is no need for anyone, Jew or otherwise, to misspell that word out of a superstitious sense of respect which, as I argued earlier, is a form of self-enforced mental conditioning meant to coerce yourself to believe in something that is quite obviously unreal, that unreal something being your god. It's a form of cultish brainwashing.

I think you missed the point, but am really too tired to want to try to clear it up again.

I even indicated that among us Jews, some think that only the Hebrew/Aramaic are meant, but as Jews moved to other lands and began to take on their languages as their own.... it should also be quite obvious that G-d is G-d regardless of the language being used to name the entity.

Or?

Or. "God" is not a name. Not a proper name, anyway. It could just as easily refer to any other god, like Wotan, Zeus or Allah.

Thanks, Shangrila !
I believe the rules don't really allow me to respond in German, but since you were kind enough to ask me how I am doing in German:

Danke, mir geht's ganz gut! Momentan ist viel zu tun, aber im wesentlichen, alles paletti. Wie sieht's bei Dir aus?

(Pssst: if you don't tell, I won't!!!)
