Several posters have been making claims about Florida's new concealed carry law that makes it legal to conceal without a permit. They're claiming that it's going to cause gun violence to increase.

Rather than drag those threads off topic I thought it deserved a thread all of its own.

So if you think that is the case feel free to present any solid evidence here because no one was able to come up with any there.

My question on that is that before this law, if I cop stopped someone downtown, saw they had a gun, and asked for a concealed carry license, and if they had one, let them go with the assurance that the person was a solid citizen. Now, if someone is carrying, and they are say, on parole or an ex felon, what would be the circumstance for the cops to go forward to find that out? It seems under the new law they are going to let a lot of people not authorized to legally carry go about their business.

I'm sure that would be considered probable cause to run their ID.

There are people prohibited from carrying and the only way the cop will know that is if he runs their ID.

If that was happening to any degree I'm sure that other states that have passed the same law would have some information available on that.

Good statistical evidence takes time to accumulate.

This poor old country mouse is content to await the passage of time rather than engage in what is for now meaningless palaver.

What would be probably cause now?

Before; you would have probable cause because the person in question couldn't produce a CC license. So I can see running an ID check on such a person because without a CC license, they were breaking the law. But since there is no longer a legal requirement to have one, where does the cop derive probable cause?

Also, I'm not sure what problem this law was enacted to fix. Gun owners in Florida were largely supportive of the Concealed Carry program in Florida, and I don't know who this law is supposed to benefit.

I’ve seen a lot of disinformation about the new law posted by anti gun nuts. Here is a short list and corrections.

    False premise #1:
“Road rage incidents will increase because people will have more guns in cars”.

    Correction #1:
It has always been legal for anyone (with or without a concealed carry permit) to have a gun in their car, such as in the glove box or in a holster fixed under the seat.

    False premise #2:
“Shootings will increase because everyone at the bar will have a gun”.

    Correction #2:
It was illegal to possess a gun in a bar before. It remains illegal under the new law.

    False premise #3:
“Everyone can carry a gun concealed now in FL”

    Correction #3:
It is illegal for anyone who is disqualified from receiving a concealed carry permit in Florida (which are still offered under the new law with the same restrictions on felons, domestic violence perpetrators, fugitives from justice, etc.) to carry concealed under the new law.

The following folk are still prohibited from concealed carry just like before.

So nothing has changed as far as who can legally carry based on long standing prohibitions.

I’ll try to update as I see more disinformation from anti gun nuts.

My question is simple and common sense.

Why would you give criminals that advantage? A criminal carrying a concealed weapon always had the chance of being spotted and stopped and checked to see if he had a record or not. Now, they can carry a gun and not worry about it.

Additionally, most citizens that are NOT criminals have permits and carry them with them, and therefore would have no fear of getting stopped and checked. Why would you give the criminals such an advantage????

Common sense, no? What is DeSantis trying to accomplish?

When a cop stops you for anything, he'll ask for your ID. Then he'll run your name through his computer and if you are a felon or wanted by the law he'll know.

Simple answer -- allowing law-abiding people to protect themselves against the bad dudes, who will always have a gun.

Anyone carrying in FL must carry ID so they can be checked if necessary. No advantage to criminals. They are subjected to the same laws. If they are already criminals they are already prohibited from carrying under the new law.

Simple answer -- he is trying to solidify support among the gun nuts......something he puts before the resultant loss of life.

You did not address what I said. Right now, if anyone is seen carrying a concealed weapon, they get checked. Upon checking, those that are criminals will be arrested. Under this new law, carrying a concealed weapon can be done, meaning the cops will no longer even check the person if they note he/she is carrying a gun.

You mean that at this time, "law abiding citizens" cannot carry/protect themselves by getting a permit to carrying a concealed weapon?

Asking a person for their ID because they have a gun would not be constitutional if policy is no license or constitutional carry.

I'm very keen on keeping guns out of the hands of criminals. Not sure if keeping police from checking ID of those who carry a gun is beneficial.

Uuum. The so called “gun nuts”, you know the most responsible citizens who rarely shoot anyone illegally, already carry. This law doesn’t impact them at all. FYI. Just letting you know because you’re a bit uninformed.

Patrolmen can check someone's criminal history during a traffic stop. If the check comes back with prior convictions, he knows the person isn't a solid citizen.

But, how many times have we heard the anti-gunners say we don't have to show an ID to a cop?

Remember that dude in Alabama that was watering his neighbor's flowers and the cops arrested him for not producing his ID? The same people here that he didn't have to are the same ones, now, demanding we should have to have a CCW permit and have to show it anytime a cops says to.

What? You think concealed carry with a permit is more “visible” than without? Can you provide evidence concealed carriers are “made” by cops all over the place and checked out?

Under this law, ANYONE carrying can still be ID’d and checked for whether or not they are qualified to carry. Literally NOTHING changes in the context of your concern.

You see it as giving criminals an advantage, but the state sees it as giving the citizen an advantage.

Gun control nuts should just "not own any gun" and leave us law-abiding "wannabe Wyatt Erps" alone -- LOL
Liberals are so miserable they want to enact laws to make everyone miserable.
All gun laws are designed as a step in the direction of total gun confiscation. Our liberal politicians know they need to have guns registered so they can then know where and how many guns to seize. Ain't going to happen. But the criminals would love for it to happen and guess why.
Remember the seat belt law. If you were stopped and didn't have the seat belt fastened you could be ticketed but you could not be ticketed as the first offense. That was the first step. Now it's a first offense.

If a cop see someone carrying a gun you can bet he's going to ID that person.

And if someone is "seen' carrying a concealed gun..... They're obviously not concealing it because if it's concealed it won't be seen

LOL -- Those wanting gun laws know so little about guns. To them even a BB gun or a slingshot is an assault weapon.

    Sure, if you say so.

Bottom line is that now, anyone can carry a concealed weapon without having a permit and the only people that will benefit from it are the criminals. If you are not a criminal, you can easily get a permit. In addition, a permit allows for the person to be ground checked and receive training. What benefit can there be to not keep that in affect, other than to get votes. NONE!!!!
