How Beijing Is Redefining What It Means to Be Chinese,

When I read this article, I was reminded of the time my son told me of something he did when he was in college. A professor started telling the class what a terrible country the U.S. was, saying that it was no better than a third world dictatorship. My son, a Purple Heart veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, stood up and interrupted the professor.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, WHOA!", he said, "You have no idea what you're talking about!" And then he told the professor about what life was like for people in other countries. He told of things he had seen for himself.

I thought of that when I read this Time Magazine article about China.

Our country has been a work in progress since its inception. We may criticize and seek to improve it. But it's worthwhile, at the same time, to keep things in perspective.

The US is gradually becoming worse, becoming more like all these other countries, but as far as where things stand right now, it's sadly still one of the best and freest countries in the world.

For a time, maybe around the late 1990s to 2010, it looked like China was gradually becoming more like the US, while the US was becoming more like China. Of course there was still a huge gulf of difference between the two societies, they were still not anywhere close to converging.
But that changed beginning around the time of the 2007 US Recession and then the new Chinese President Xi Xingping. Those trends of China changing suddenly reversed.

Time Magazine allows you to visit their site and read a limited number of articles without a subscription. I don't know what that limit is. But then they cut you off.

Basically, the article is about the deliberate and systematic destruction of cultures in China other than the Han culture. The targets of this destruction are the Uighurs and Mongols. Here are the introductory paragraphs:

In July 2017, Gulzira Auelkhan’s father fell ill. So she made the short hop from her village in the windswept Kazakhstan countryside into her native China to care for him. Upon arrival in the western province of Xinjiang, however, she was arrested, for no given reason. No charges were ever brought, but she spent the next 15 months being ferried between five different prison camps with barbed wire and watchtowers, during which she was interrogated 19 times and tortured with electric batons. Her interrogators had no clear explanation for her detention. “Once they asked me, ‘Do you have a TV in Kazakhstan?’” says Auelkhan, 42. “‘In which case your ideology has been corrupted.’”

Auelkhan, an ethnic Kazakh Muslim who grew up speaking a Turkic dialect, was forced to learn Mandarin Chinese, the Chinese flag and sing songs exulting the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) beneath photos of President Xi Jinping. “We all had to eat pork, and I was forced to burn a Koran and a prayer mat,” she says. “There was to be no more praying.” Afterward, she was sent to a labor camp for two months, where she sewed gloves until she says her neck ached and her eyes turned bloodshot.

Auelkhan was told she would be paid 6,000 yuan ($930) but received only 220 yuan ($33). Camp guards told detainees that “from now, all ethnicities will be as one and must share the same language and food,” she says. At one point, Auelkhan was given what she was told was a flu shot, and afterward her periods became infrequent and irregular. “I became lethargic and today can’t even knead bread without feeling tired,” she says.

China says allegations of mass detention, rapes and forced sterilization in Xinjiang province are “lies and absurd allegations.” Yet seemingly everybody there knows a friend or family member who has been disappeared. The new rules governing the province are clear: men can no longer sport beards, nor women headscarves. Fasting during Ramadan is forbidden, as is the Islamic greeting “As-salaamu ‘Alaikum,” or “Peace be upon you.”

CCP officials are assigned to live with minorities in their own homes, while AI-powered facial-recognition cameras enable predictive policing in what Amnesty International calls a “dystopian hellscape.” Wearing a slightly longer dress, or forgetting to shave, is enough to flag the surveillance algorithm, according to recently leaked internal files, possibly resulting in detention. “They want to destroy [non-Han] language and culture,” says Auelkhan, who is now based in the U.S. “To brainwash the people.”

I'm not sure the Chinese are too concerned about this. The way they see things, they have overwhelming numbers of Han population.

But they have embarked on trying to reduce Muslim Uighur fertility rates. Probably the local officials appointed by Beijing in Xinjiang are afraid the muslims will outbreed the Han population, in that province. The government has been creating incentives for people from Han areas to populate Xinjiang, trying to make sure that region is integrated with China. Russia during the Soviet Union did the same thing, trying to "Russify" outlying nations that they feared would want to secede.
But the thing is Chinese people don't really want to move to Xinjiang. It's a backwater, a more remote region, to the Far West. Beijing could simply overwhelm them with Han Chinese population if they really wanted to, but they don't want to have to resort to doing that.

What China is most paranoid about is anyone opposing the government or ruling Communist Party, or any part of Chinese-controlled territory trying to break away.

China has a population so huge it is almost unimaginable.
93% of the land can not grow or provide food.
There is potential to establish solar electricity farms so vast the eye wouldn’t take it in.
The population want some kind of healthcare education occupation housing transport legal structure and system of organisation.
The macro challenges would overshadow the micro concerns of smaller and at the moment more developed societies.
The major natural resource is in it’s people, in number terms alone they have highly capable people in terms of intellect that other countries actually wish to learn from.
The scale of things in China is the awesome thing.
The current regime are riddled with problems and can be criticised endlessly, but I suppose that can be said of most governments to greater or lesser degrees, but the task of even keeping the show on the road is the big thing.

No, he didn’t. He was in his senior year and a straight A student. Throughout his college career he just kept his mouth shut when he heard that sort of thing ... until that day. He spoke for about 2 minutes, ending with “You have no idea how lucky you are to have been born an American.”

Remarkably, he said the professor thanked him. After class, multiple students approached him and thanked him too.
