Bummer. I was hoping you were right on this because it does make a good story. But I just looked it up. California seems to fall squarely in the middle with 15 year sentences for incest being the norm. That's as opposed to Life imprisonment in Florida or Tennessee. And then everyone carves out religious exemptions so the really small communities can avoid marrying outside.

But as far as I can tell California, NY, and Illinois carry 15, 20, and 25 year sentences, respectively. The only state without anything on the books is Rhode Island. There's New Jersey, where the laws only apply to minors, and Ohio, where they only apply to parental figures.

I thought it sounded too good to be true. Although what strikes me as crazy is the fact that these laws are still so prevalent and so draconian. While the idea certainly doesn't appeal to me I'm not sure I think we should have laws against any two people having sex together as long as it involves consent (and avoids conception, I guess, when incest is concerned.) The more I think about it the more squeamish I feel about the whole thing but it kind of feels like overreach to me, something government should be involved with.

 

I oppose the criminalization of incest, so as to defend the liberty of the individual and given the strong taboo associated with the practice do not consider incest a serious threat to the future success and well-being of the species even if one were to stress the interests of the many over those of the few. Even when social conservatives invoke the slippery slope fallacy, it is interesting to note how the consequences a practice is oft claimed to descend toward are no more offensive or disagreeable than the actual matter at hand (in this case, gay marriage). Anyway, that's my two cents on this issue.

 

Not with brother and sister, no, but somebody posted a chart here awhile back that had a breakdown of all the different states' laws on first cousin marriage. And contrary to popular belief, it was the blue ones that had the most lax laws and the red ones that were the strongest against it.

 

Ultimately, what 2 consenting adults choose to do is their business -- including direct relatives.

The state should only get involved when minors are part of the equation.

 

gays try to deny this, but if/when gays get their "rights" the incest crew will think "hey, we should be able to do the same things, too" and invent terms like "incestophobe" to push their agenda they feel 'persecuted' with.
