Why thank you very much. How gracious of you! I think if I hang around here for a while, and I get to know you, I might just take you up that offer.

It has to be noted, that my undoubtedly legendary Uncle Jimmy, a born and bred Kerryman, ran a bar in Manhattan for the best part of 40 years. I never saw him behind the bar, but my brothers who did said it was truly a site to behold! Calling my Uncle Jimmy a character really wouldn't even come close to describing him. Alas, he has recently been diagnosed with alzheimer's and can no longer travel, so I fear my next visit will be accompanied by great sorry. But as anyone knows, there is thought to be only one Irish cure for great sorrow, and that is of course to, as you say, "imbibe" the water of life. If that means doing it from the Bronx to Montauk, then I am "in like Flynn"!!

God Bless Uncle Jim and keep the faith as we will beat the affliction that is Alzheimer's and it will be sooner than later.
And God Bless the many young lads of County Kerry that spilled their blood for the adopted homeland during our Civil War by forming the greatest fighting unit during that war , the Fighting 69th . Still with us today .
I'm looking forward to the visit , the pubs , and we'll hit the beaches in between to get in a little surf fishing .

WHOA! Another flyfisher on the forum. That's one of my passions. Most of the time
I'm fishing northern New Mexico, Colorado or, my fave, western North Carolina. I haven't
    fished a lake in decades.

By the way, I use both flies. The Adams and the Parachute Adams. I must admit the
change was very difficult. Really, are two flies necessary? I'm glad I've moved into
    the modern era. LOL!

    I fish a 5wt Winston and a 3 wt Winston. I've got a couple of others but don't
remember the last time I used them. The 3wt is my all time fave.

Here's what you need to do to make your time memorable.

    1. Decide where you want to fish. It doesn't matter where as long as
the water is moving, i.e. rivers, creeks and streams.

    2. Hire a guide. Maybe $250 for a half day which is really a full day.
Seriously. You'll learn more in 2 hours than in 2 years of going on your
own. He knows where the fish are and what you need to do to catch
them. He'll provide ALL of the tackle and teach you what to do. Tell
him you've never seen a house fly. No way will he take advantage of you.
He wants to keep his good reputation. Fly shops won't hire bad guides.

Many rivers have private "trophy water". That might cost an extra $50 to
$100 but you have a chance of a 20"+ fish (trout is inches, bass lbs) maybe
bigger. A 20" trout is akin to an 8lb bass.

Just tell the guide what you want.

    TMI (hope not)

Way, way back when universities started teaching online I had to sign up as an insturctor. I signed up as mak. I was too computer illiterate to understand I had to sign back in to get my access to work so I signed in again as mak1, couldnt figure that out either so I tried mak2. Then I realized what I was doing wrong. I wonder if I am still mak and mak1 at that college.

I always wondered if you were the reincarnation of a former mod on this site who lives in Australia. She went by Mak.

    Wonder whatever happened to her...

I like to use a three weight unless it's windy, in which case a 5 does a better job of putting the fly where you want it. Sometimes, I'll go up to a seven if I'm using big flies on big water, but usually a five is plenty big enough.

When I use two or three files on the same line, it's generally one on top and one on the bottom (sinking). Trout will come up and refuse the dry, then take the dropper. The downside is that the more flies, the more tangles.

I honestly haven't had any trouble with my 3wt in the wind. I like my 5wt but
haven't had to go any heavier. It's a fantastic rod.

I have a Shakespear fiberglass fly rod from the 60's. It may be an 8 or
9wt. Dad bought it brand new and I ended up being the only one to use it. It
    was purchased for bass fishing.
I rarely fish a dropper. Dry fly is my thing. I'll go wet when nothing is taking
    a dry.

Where do you fish? Fave river? Area?

Sorry for getting back so late to your post Pruney and I'm planning on using your advice . I'm usually hitting the beaches ,surf casting,on long island Oct,Nov and depending on weather Dec . But we've got some great freshwater fly fishing spots in upstate NY that I'm going to tryout in April when the season opens . I'm going to have to look into picking up the tackle and do some research on it .A friend of mine started NY Fly Fishing a few years back going with fly fishing for Strip Bass out in Montauk Point , the economy sunk that business fast enough but he also is a avid freshwater flyguy so I'll pick his head and bring him with me upstate when I get the chance . Thanks for the tips ,I'm sure I'll like it.

I fished the Ausable a few years ago. I had a guide but it had been raining very
hard for several days so the water was too high to do any good. In the
meantime he taught me some different tactics I've used since.

I fish mostly in the Kings River (California) and the High Sierra, not that it's necessarily my favorite, but it's close enough for day trips. I like Northern California, the Sacramento above Shasta Dam and its tributaries, but that's an all day drive each way.

I think if you will try using a dropper, you'll catch just as many on the dry and more on the dropper, effectively more than doubling your catch (when conditions are right, that is).

No doubt I'll catch more fish. I see a dry and a wet combination as nymph fishing.
The dry is the strike indicator and the wet the attractor.

I simply like fishing dry flies and particularly the Adams and Parachute Adams.

I tell my dropper and wet friends that I fish both flies, the Adams AND the
Parachute Adams. Like, "we have both kinds of music. Country AND
    Western."

Truth be told I'll go to wets frustration gets the best of me.

    I'm from Modesto.

There used to be a rock band I liked that played at my local pub called 'Lizarddust'. My father also used that term. He's a retired bricklayer. Skinks (the lizard variety) used to get trapped between piles of bricks, die then dehydrate leaving only 'lizarddust' . True story.

sure; are you into letterology instead of numerology? I am into container gardening. I am growing some herbs like basil and echinacea as well. I hope to grow enough for cooking and teas and maybe tinctures.

By the way, i have been pruning our lemon tree and picking lemons.

some chics claim to like my initials.
