Thanks to the internet, widespread promulgation of conspiracy theories is dropping political discourse into the gutter and making it impossible for democratic decisions to be made regarding very important matters.

For instance, two people cannot rationally discuss foreign policy at all if one is under the sway of 9/11 truth. It is impossible, because the two people would not even be able to agree on a common reality, let alone a common policy. The conspiracy theorist is incapable of having a rational discussion with a non-conspiracy theorist regarding policy, and often puts forth extremist arguments/solutions for problems that do not even exist. For instance, a person who beleives Republicans are responsible for 9/11, will do everything he can to disrupt and tear down a Republican Government, even if that Government is a relatively good one.

Conspiracy theories are the heart and soul of extremist groups around the world and clearly "harm trust in government" to the point that a society can barely function at all. These are just the worst ones. We don't even discuss the small ones people beleive such as the GOP is controlled by the Koch Brothers and the Democrat Party by George Soros.

What are we to do in a world where false "truths" can be spread easily by charlatans and the delusional? Is giving the village retard a megaphone really a good idea? How do we stop conspiracy theorists from slowly undermining public faith in society, governance and law itself?

Only one entity has destroyed the trust in government. Its name: government.

Government may be incompetent. It may try to be all things to all people and fail miserably. But it isn't malicious or actively seeking to harm people. Especially American Government which has checks and balances that extend all the way down to the County and Local Area.

Hating Government just for being Government is an illegitimate thought process and must be stamped out.

Excellent point here. I blame our deteriorating educational system, and I even blame religion for helping people think that blind faith is equal to critical thinking and the scientific method. Conspiracy theorists arise because of human nature, which is often quite superstitious and unreasonable, and also paranoid. Then you throw in social isolation, something we've been dealing with ever since the industrial revolution. It's a potent brew for creating kooks.

Good God. Your OP was about trust. Don't switch it to hate. TRUST. Every election year we get people who lie at the podium and then do the exact opposite. These people then run the great checks and balances, as if their presence is somehow reassuring when filled by crooks. We get wars that benefit America in zero ways. Policies that help foreign nations over our own people. Every term the government uses tends to result in the exact opposite of what it implies. From federal reserve to right to work. The government is a sham. And that is incorporating no conspiracy theories. Conspiracy theorist are nothing more than those of the citizenry who the lies are so obvious their minds run rampant with what else they could be lying about. Please allow me to repeat myself.....

Only one entity has destroyed the trust in government. Its name: government.

    I agree to an extent...

However, conspiracy theorists and the ability to push their theories so easily don't help anything along though...

How do we get people to stop believing in Conspiracy theories?

People believe in conspiracy theories because they know they have no power over their own destiny but have been brainwashed against the only possible answers. In the American case it reaches extreme levels because Americans have been taught somehow to separate 'government' from the people the government represents, the thieving capitalists. The answer, like the answer to so many problems, is extremely obvious, but Senator McCarthy forbade you to think about it.

the vagueness of the OP's question suggest that we indeed just become good little brainwashed sheep to the slaughter, or else the OP would be more specific as to what is deemed a conspiracy and what is deemed a theory. Because everybody knows the term "Conspiracy Theory" is an oxymoron that cannot co-exist in the same dialouge..

So, doesn't that mean if you are asking others to stop believing in conspiracy thoeries, that you are being swayed by them yourself and are the very person you are asking others to condemn?

Others like you from places outside of America know (*)(*)(*)(*) well what is going on in America, better than most Americans. Now honestly, when Americans like me talk about globalists and the central banking cartel, are we conspiracy theorists, or are those who can't see what is completely obvious retarded?

That depends on whether this poster had worked in the U.K. Merchant banking industry for 28 years and was involved in the likes of what happened in Wall Street, wouldn't it?

Conspiracy theory is certainly a possibility...

    No...

If I felt folks should stop being so gullible and believing every little CT that comes along, that wouldn't indicate any sort of sway...

The mockery called representation. The pimping of the populace of every western nation the central banking cartel reigns over. The entirety of America being used by a few for global conquest. A world condemning a nation that is a shell of such, without control of its own destiny, and then agreeing with those who keep the masses of said nation ignorant of its design and intention. The programmed status quo will only awaken when they realize even though they outnumber the "conspiracy theorists" internally, their perception is that of a cheap design, with the tact and integrity of a used car dealership commercial.

This is the equivalent of asking: "When will the government tell the truth?"

I honestly believe non believers are in denial. How much do you know? Ive been unemployed for a year doing nothing much research and you look at the people in power and the entire timeline. From the very first civilization that showed up on land. The Sumerians. And you look at how the Bible is written and translated from a lot of these Sumerian stories. And the Bible also represents sacred geometry. There is a consoiracy. It becames apparant. They say through out history only 3% off ANY given population makes the decision. So that makes 97% people just accepting ourenslavement. The conspiracy is against enlightenment. The ancients had knowledge. The main thing ppl should worry about now is the energy crisis. They are sucking us dry. Never ending debt thanks to the federal reserve. Our money is valuated by gas. How much gas we are using determines the spending power of our "money" they have free energy systems being supressed. what has histories wars been about? POWER imagine if we could get more people aware of these free energy technologies. Now the ENTIRE INDUSTRY LOSES TRILLIONS that is going to waste. Energy is infinite. Just like the universe. Just have to tap it. Nano tech style. Maybe cold fusion? Never heard of it huh. Zero point? This fact alone proves there is a conspiracy of MASS porportion. Which could solve our crisis and create world peace. Now energy doesnt cost money. its being infinitely tapped. Able to be trasmitted wirelessly. All that money filters into the rest of the economy. THE AGE OF ABUNDANCE! Wake up people.

    Sure...yeah...whatever.

    Here in America,

I'm sure that most people could agree that rich people would do things that would best suit them, and have interests of their own that they spent money on, or invested money for research and development. They're rich, they can afford to do those sorts of things. And another thing is certain when the rich are involved, and that is the reigns of control are never far from the grasp of their hands. Again, they are blessed with this latitude usually and simply because they have more monopoly money than you and I do.

But for "small people" to deny that "big people" control us...it is, uh, disheartening.

However. There is a however to this. Capitalism allows an individual the opportunity to flourish if they have enough of the "IT Factor" of being successful.

There is naturally a real gimme to that system though. It boils down to the individual. Will they grow up and be the type of person that has the work ethic necessary to 'really make it in the world' and 'be worth the investment'? Or just another defective waste producing interchangeable cog.

The USA was founded by Freemasons... That's fact, not a conspiracy theory. And the Freemasons carried on an ancient tradition of sun worship that, by their claims, anteceded the Bible & upon which the Gospel story is actually based.

The only way "big people" control us is by putting out commericals that make you want to buy their (*)(*)(*)(*), which causes us to go out and get into debt to the "big people".

Don't want them to control you? Don't buy their (*)(*)(*)(*). Live a more minimalist lifestyle that doesn't require debt.

You believe it is as simple as that?

And you really believe that the richest people in the world don't posses leveraging power? Enlighten me.
