So I’m curious as to how to solve the problem of the main stream media in a way that doesn’t violate my general conservative/libertarian beliefs around a limited govt but I struggle to see how. I’m not comfortable with using the govt to crack down on their lies, as they serve as a significant check against the govt. However, at this point they aren’t serving as a check against the govt...they are SERVING the govt, at least the left side of it.

They aren’t trusted because of their constant lies and misrepresentations yet due to partisan divides maintain power. The MSM has completely gone from media outlets that made at least a genuine attempt to tell the truth to completely lying in some cases and in the best of cases misrepresenting the truth or simply telling only one sides story, or perhaps only briefly mentioning the opposing sides story while giving ample air time to the other.

It’s almost impressive how they recognize all they have to do is control how you “feel” and then they can control how you think. The Sandmann incident was a perfect example. To this day Sandmann has to deal with the ire and Hatred of so many based on a false narrative that lasted only 1 weekend. But that weekend of MSM driven false narratives was enough to create feelings of anger that dont diminish once the false narrative is proven false and replaced with the truth. Despite the fact we now know he was simply standing still and doing nothing wrong he still is so hated there are those who dont even want him in college, and professors issuing veiled threats, and generally just disrespecting him.

The “Trump Russia Collusion” hoax is another perfect example. CNN would constantly have its hosts discuss “what to do” about the collusion. They didnt entertain the possibility it was true, they didnt have any evidence it was true, but yet that didnt stop them from specifically treating the accusation as if it were a foregone conclusion and they just needed to discuss how to deal with it. 2.5 years of that, and even now we know its not true there are so many that simply can’t help but believe it. People like Bill Meyer, completely shocked people didnt see the “evidence” only to have to later admit when the report came out he felt “owned” because he convinced himself he saw something that wasn’t there, largely based on the media’s coverage.

Or the entire issue around BLM/antifa having such favorable coverage no matter what they do, how many people they assault or kill, no matter how many buildings they burn(even with people in them). And anyone who stands up to them is immediately labeled as white supremacists, such as Kyle Rittenhouse who quite literally would be dead right now had he not defended himself so effectively, and even showed great restraint in letting the guy with a gun live after his fake surrender.

Is this problem something that can be solved you think? I mean, obviously civil war would solve it, but I would prefer we have a peaceful solution but the more I see the nations left get their emotions manipulated by the MSM the more I think its impossible to find a peaceful solution.

Anyone have any ideas? Certainly it could be solved if the MSM just stopped being supported by the populace. But as long as they are saying things some want to hear, lies or not, they will have support. And people will further place themselves firmly on a side, and eventually the violence will become the status quo until eventually violent revolution occurs. This is something I dont want to see, but am unfortunately seeing it as inevitable. Violence is getting worse, not better and has been for a decade now, and its clear the emotions are being drummed up by the MSM.

I also want to be clear, while I have stated I see civil war as inevitable that is in no way me calling for it, encouraging it, or wanting it. Me talking about it is simply because I want to avoid it.

What do y’all think? Am I being to pessimistic? Do you agree? Disagree? Do you think the MSM is honest? Let’s hear it...

The media is not supposed to be a check on govt, it's a business.

Maybe it should be made illegal for the media to report bad things about Trump, even if true. Prawda, here we come.

No, I dont think that should happen at all.

Though a law against purposefully putting out fake news would be an interesting law, to some degree I think it already exists but a much more directly applied law. But then again, who decides when its fake and to what degree? Can they tell a little bit of truth and add a lot of lies masked as opinion? What about genuine mistakes? It’s a murky area.

Convenient or not, makes no difference to me.

I’m posting about something that is a genuine issue and needs to be addressed. But admittedly, I am not sure how to do so without causing a whole slew of other problems.

    It’s a murky area.

I genuinely dont care about whatever connection you are trying to make here.

I’m simply pointing out a genuine issue with the media, and provided examples of this.

Do you see any way to improve the media?

The Press is a competitive industry. The only way consumers can effect competing businesses is with their wallets. There is more media than one could consume in a hundred lifetimes. Something for everybody. Your concern seems to be not one of "improvement," but rather one of control. No thanks. Don't like the news? Read a book.

Not at all one of control, but genuine improvement away from lies and manipulation. If it were one of control I would simply advocate for govt control or something similar.

Stop reading the National Enquirer. Read the Wall Street Journal. Watch PBS. No lies from either.

No one forces you to consume news. That's a decision you make. Your question is like asking me how do we improve the Big Mac. It doesn't make much sense.

I’m not reading any of those that you mentioned, including the one you unreasonably just assume I am.

I’m not concerned about ME reading the news so much as I am concerned about the objective lies passed as truth causing such misinformation to spread around the nation, and wreaking havoc because of it.

I think that’s a serious issue and is worth seriously looking into to determine a way to combat it, change the institutions, etc. It makes complete sense.

I would be happy if they got back to reporting the news rather than their opinions.

I have no idea what you're talking about. Some media outlets lie. Others don't. Don't patronize those that lie if you don't like it. If a news outlet has an audience, who are you to tell them how to operate? Your idea reeks of authoritarian censorship. I'll keep my 1st Amendment rights, thank you.

I’ve been quite clear. I dont patronize those who lie, however my concern is with the lies and misrepresentations that occur and the consequences that come with it regardless of who I choose to patronize.

My issue is with objective, proven lies. I’m not sure how we can as a nation address this, but it is most certainly worth discussing a variety of ways that could be used to address it.

If you dont like the idea of discussing the variety of ways we can address the lies and misrepresentations then you dont have to participate. I made this to gauge interest, or lack there of, in those who may want to and see what ideas they can offer.

    I agree!

Do you have any ideas on how we can as a populace encourage this in our news sources?

Certainly our wallet is one way, however do you have any other ideas?

Are you concerned that the POTUS lies, or just the press?

And??? So far, you haven't presented one idea. I've argued that it doesn't work that way, which is just plainly obvious. Start a protest. Write nasty letters to the editor. Good luck.

What on earth are you talking about? We live in a free society. In a free society, we allow people to lie. We also realize this as being a fact of life. Something we all realize by adulthood.

It's a free press. They understand dollars. You can't stop them from publishing anything. 1st Amendment and all, so boycott the company. Good luck.

I haven’t presented an idea because I’m here asking for ideas. And just because we allow people to lie doesn’t mean we can’t discuss ways to help prevent it, especially given the power of the media.

I think there could be a better answer than “it’s a fact of life”. Possibly

Let's work on the POTUS lies first. He's more powerful than the media.

Not quite. It exhibits imperfect competition and, factor in rich owners (like Murdoch who uses cross market subsidisation to maintain influential loss-making product), you're in the realm of market power horror.

It amuses me to see right wingers, often falsely using the libertarian tag, whine about left wing bias in the media. There's actually only significant political effect by the big box media via the so called Fox News effect. That must mean that they're wrong over their understanding of bias or Fox News watchers are more gullible...

I don’t think so, the media last far longer than 4 to 8 years. I think they are far more powerful.
