    So I'm trying to move here in the next couple of weeks because the house I live in is just, well, crap. Storm came through last year and all the water from the ditch came flowing right underneath the house and unsettled it. It's now uneven, cracks in the floor and even the tub. So I'm looking for a new place to live. Only problem is everytime I put in my city in the search engine it brings up everything but my town. If I wanted Jacksonville I would have put it in. Seriously. It's just annoying.

    I have. My city isn't very big to begin with so I understand if it doesn't get a lot of listings, I just don't want to get all the surrounding cities availabilities either.

    I simply would not tolerate that crap if I were you. Throw the computer into the street, then sit on the front porch in your boxers, drinking a beer or several. When the cops arrive, dare them to make you clean it up. When they attempt to approach you, run and call them bastards!

    I know what you're thinking... *Angedras is trying to be funny.* You may be correct, but look at it from this perspective, if you follow my advice, you'll have a dry place to stay (at least for a while), with three squares a day... and a free toothbrush too!

    ~~~
    Seriously, I do wish you good luck in finding a place soon. ;)
    But I don't drink.......
    And depending on what day of the week it is I may or may not be wearing boxers. Have fun with that little piece of knowledge.
    Well, I never got a free toothbrush.
    ... OP might give city-data.com a try.
    Kind of reminds me of the time I tried to change my mailing address when I moved over the phone. The city had a long goofy sounding Indian name and whenever I said it it kept giving me another city that actually was a tiny town much smaller than the city I moved too. Figuring that my speech was slurred because I had been drinking before I made the phone call (when I am drunk I sometimes get the urge to to menial boring tasks that I normally put off as long as possible ...go figure) I even had one of my friends try it and got the same deal. That was the one and only time I ever did a change of address with the Post Office. I learned the next move that if I don't do the change of address it takes a long time for junk mail to catch up and some of it never does. :cool:
    We have done extensive research before moving, just to find out that....well, all the data in the world is just that, raw data.
    Sure, you will read about the average temps, storms, crime, household income....
    Narrow your search by looking at a map, then do a direct search at city-data, as mentioned by another member. Contact a realtor, making sure you have set a very specific criteria. You'd be surprised how much info a realtor can provide.
    Google the addresses, esp street view. Search for nearby rivers and streams, railways, highways etc.
    Since you are worried about flooding, this may help.
    FEMA floodmaps
    Something that helped us a lot was looking up a city's web page, contacting them with specific questions.
    If you can afford it, visit and get a feel for the place, checking it out during the day and at night. Talk to the neighbors. Don't be shy.
    But know this. No matter how much research you do, nothing is ever perfect. We learned the hard way. :)
    Well I'm already familiar with the city, I grew up here. And this is one of those towns where everyone knows each other and if they don't then their cousin does. Small town. I just get frustrated with online searches and it keeps directing me to the next town instead. Had the same problem when I was looking online for jobs.
    My advice, don't move to towns you can't pronounce when sober much less when you're drunk. Either that or put a guy with a lisp on the phone trying to pronounce it. May as well have fun with it.
