The Trump family stopped putting their own money into the Trump foundation in 2008. Since then, it only used money donated from other sources. Also, even if it was his money put into the charity, it's still a felony for him to use the money to pay for anything for himself. It's called self-dealing. It's illegal, regardless of where the money came from. The owner of a charity isn't allowed to use the charity's money for personal use.

And the government kept him from closing it because they were in the middle of a criminal investigation over him embezzling money from the charity to pay for his own legal fees over his fake college.
