That's the promise the Republican Party has made for 35+ years now to the foes of abortion rights.... could some of our "pro-life" friends explain why that has NOT happened....and how much more time you're going to give the GOP?
I think it is quickly becoming a non-issue. Politically, the GOP needs to understand that most voters either don't have a strong enough opinion on abortion to sway their vote, or are pro-choice, even within the ranks of Republican party. Personally, I don't know a single person who picks their candidate based on this topic alone, and I hang out with some really (really) conservative people. There are, frankly, way more important things to base your vote on than fighting a 40 year old losing battle. Fact is, candidates can promise all they want to, but its a battle already lost, and political capital is better spent addressing other things.
I go further than "non-issue"....I think it was a conjob. One that fooled some on the Left or pro-choice side, but fooled LOTS of "pro-lifers". I don't think the GOP ever had any intention of passing the "Human Life Amendment", which would have Constitutionally banned abortion....even though it has been IN the GOP's party platform for years. From 2003 to 2006, the GOP had the House, the Senate, and "pro-life" Dubya in the White House....and didn't even hold a Committee vote, much less a full Floor vote, on the HLA. Why? They, as well as the "pro-lifers", CLAIM that majority of Americans are "pro-life" Why not hold a vote on the Amendment and send it out to the States? UNLESS...it's not about getting abortion ended....but endlessly PROMISING to end abortion....and get the "pro-lifers" into the voting booth for the GOP's real agenda of more tax cuts for the wealthy, de-regulation, corporate goodies, etc.
Sorry but there are still ignorant one issue voters . The proof is a whackjob like Michelle Bachmann being re elected...in a Catholic district.
Pretty much. Mickey Crazy-Eyes goes out every Fall promising to vote to "save the babies"...and the "pro-lifers" turn out and vote for her, even though Bachmann never accomplishes anything to overturn Roe or ban abortion. That's just a micro-level version of the entire relationship between the "pro-lifers" and the GOP.
