Ilhan Omar Trivializes 9/11 Terrorist Attacks: 'Some People Did Something'

Oh look...the crazy right wing taking 4 words out of context to smear Omar again.

The nerve and hypocrisy of the fake news right never ceases to amaze.

“Far too long we have lived with the discomfort of being a second-class citizen, and frankly, I’m tired of it, and every single Muslim in this country should be tired of it,” Omar said at the event. “CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties.”

Sounds harmless, right? But if stripped out of the context, Omar’s phrase “some people did something” can be spun as minimizing the significance of 9/11 for both the victims and the country writ large. This is not remotely accurate if you watch the full video, which I encourage you to do as a counterpoint to the out-of-context attacks. At the end, for example, she speaks movingly about how America’s national values motivated her family to immigrate to the United States.

“As an American member of Congress, I have to make sure I live up to the ideals of fighting for liberty and justice — those are very much rooted in the reason why my family came here,” she says.

Not exactly what an anti-American ideologue would say. But the full context hasn’t stopped Republicans from using the out-of-context version to bash Omar.

 

She's just another anti-american stooge that somehow wormed her way into office.

On Wednesday morning, Fox News used its biggest megaphone to amplify an attention-starved congressman’s bad faith charge against Rep. Ilhan Omar: that, in remarks before the Council on American-Islamic Relations, she characterized the Sept. 11 attacks as “some people did something.”

Is the Post—owned, like Fox News, by Rupert Murdoch—whispering in the ears of extremists everywhere? Whatever your thoughts on that, this has already gone entirely too far, and is likely to only pick up steam.

The irony is that this narrative around Omar’s remarks is proving her exact point—bigots began widely equating terrorists with all Muslims after 9/11, but ask us not to do the same if the terrorist is white—so cutting off Omar’s remarks to make it seem like she was minimizing the attacks fits an Islamophobic narrative already entrenched on the right.

Democratic Rep. Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts accused the Post of "manipulating" Omar's remarks, and said that her full comments "clearly speak" to Islamophobia in America post-9/11.

"Manipulating her remarks is defaming & dangerous for her & her family," Pressley said on Twitter. "Stop with this recklessness."
She blamed Rupert Murdoch, who owns the Post, writing, "This is on you - stoking hate, fear & division, putting REAL lives at risk. Shame on you."

 

Anyone who buys into this smear is part of the problem....Fox, The Post.........they are the fake news.

 

Where the hell did I ever say anything about her being a terrorist? Could you please show me the context for that? You just smeared me in the exact manner you're accusing me of attacking Ilhan Omar.

I listened to what she said, and what she said was a ridiculous downplay and a brush off of the events of 9/11, and there was nothing in the rest of what she said to mitigate what she said. Everything else she said just demonstrated her twisted and flawed logic, and her belligerence towards her critics.

Please show me content to the contrary.

 

What smear? She brushed off the 9/11 terrorist attacks in a very flippant manner. Like she was waving away a pesky gnat.

PLEASE show us any specific context that shows otherwise.

 

Before it's too late. You should visit certain areas of London or Paris and see what happens when you lose control of your borders and allow hordes of people who hate the western civilisation to settle down and abuse the system to the fullest extent. This is only the beginning for you. More will come and they will demand more and more privileges.

 

Thanks to her, all kids can now get an "A" in history. "Some people did something" sums up the history of man.

 

Can you give me a time mark in that video you posted where she said those four words? I'd like to hear the context directly proceeding, and directly preceding the words in question.
