Wow, look at all the Republican opposition to the Martin Luther King Day Holiday:

Conyers achieved the highest number of cosponsors to date in 1979 with 118 House supporters on his bill (including seven Republicans), while Sen. Birch Bayh (D-Ind.) attracted 37 senators (including eight Republicans) on an identical bill.

Nevertheless, the filing of “Minority Views” by five of the committee’s Republicans signaled possible troubles ahead. The Republicans objected to the bill on grounds that a paid holiday for all federal employees was too expensive and that “the establishment of a public holiday to honor a private citizen would be contrary to our country’s longstanding tradition

All told, 18 House Members spoke during debate, including seven Members of the Congressional Black Caucus. Of the seven Republican who spoke, only one, Rep. Ben Gilman (R-N.Y.) spoke in favor of the bill

Rep. Cardiss Collins (D-Ill.), head of the CBC, said “racism had a part to do” with the House’s refusal to honor King with a full federal holiday, according to one report

When the new Congress convened in January 1983, Conyers and the CBC renewed their efforts to round-up support for another try at passing the legislation. Conyers set a new record high by rounding-up 176 House cosponsors on his bill (H.R. 800), including 10 Republicans

On June 16 Rep. Katie Hall (D-Ind.), who had been elected to Congress for the first time the preceding November, introduced her own version of the King Holiday bill (H.R. 3345) with 60 cosponsors, including three Republicans.

So, after the committee reported the bill on July 26 (H. Rept. 98-314), Hall dropped in another bill (H.R. 3706) with 108 cosponsors, including five Republicans

O’Neill was greeted by a standing ovation from his colleagues followed by an overwhelming vote of 338 to 90—53 votes more than the two-thirds necessary for passage under suspension of the rules (and for overriding a veto if necessary). Thirty-five House Members who had voted against the bill in 1979 switched to support the bill in 1983, including 26 Republicans. (The Republican vote broke narrowly for the bill, 89 to 77.)

Finally, after two days of acrimonious debate and the rejection of 12 alternative amendments, the Senate passed the bill 78 to 22 on October 19, with Democrats voting 41 to 4 in favor of the bill and Republicans voting 37 to 18 in favor

wow, why so much Republican outrage and opposition to a national holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr??????

looks like the Republicans really did become the part of racism.

    A world without Democrats?

    A really boring place.

I have mentioned this before- and I will say it again- I really hope that the Republican Party doesn't marginalize itself so far as to become irrelevant in national politics- they have largely done so in California- I think that is a bad thing.

As much as I disagree with the Republican Party, I think our country runs better with at least 2 viable political parties.

So why is the GOP most popular in the SOUTH...among whites....who voted for George Wallace and Strom Thurmond? And why was it conservative Republicans who opposed the MLK Holiday?

    - - - Updated - - -

And I'll guarantee you Blackrook would have supported the idea.

Republicans were overwhelmingly the driving force against the MLK Holiday.

    1. The GOP is strong in the South.....why is that? I thought it was full of racist Dixiecrats? Or did they all get Raptured away in the late 70s???

    2. See above. How many articles do you want of Republicans who OPPOSED the MLK holiday?

    - - - Updated - - -

Oh, but see, it's not because they were pandering to white racists.....it's because they hate holidays.

it took forever to get them to support it in the Senate and House.

rarely did they co-sponsor any bills to make a MLK holiday.

the Democrats were solidly behind the bills, while the GOPers were barely ever in support.

    I'll discuss it.

Conservatism is an excellent philosophy. It tends to get abused by many of those who call them Conservatives, but are really too greedy.

Liberalism is a terrible philosophy, The only good in it is the aspects that it shares with Conservatism, and which most liberals will quickly deny that Conservatism actually HAS included in it. Liberals can't tell the difference between a lousy philosophy and lousy people who try to follow a good philosophy.

For example helping the poor. Both philosophies want to help the poor. As does any sane system of thinking.
--Conservatism wants to help them with a little 'handout', but in the long term, a lot of 'hand-up'.
--Liberalism wants to help them with a little 'hand-up', and for the last 50 years now, a lot of 'handout'.

    and that ain't workin' folks

As a father who is raising a child in San Francisco- that is exactly what San Francisco is right now.

Should we compare my experiences raising a child in San Francisco to yours raising a child in Las Vegas?

My child has thrived in top notch public schools.

We have excellent museums- both art museums(our Asian Art Museum is world class) and science museums(anyone ever been to the Exploratoreum or Acadamy of Science?). We have the Disney Museum and we have the Maritime Museum. Heck we can do sleepovers at the Zoo or on 100 year old ships.

We have beautiful beaches for kids to play on, we have neighborhood parks and Golden Gate Park.

And our kids learn great moral values- my child doesn't judge people based upon how much money they have, or by their race or by their religion, or by where their parents were born- she judges them based upon their actions. She believes in fairness and forgivemess and in doing the right thing. She stands up to bullies who pick on smaller kids.

None of this is because our town is a Democratic town. Its because San Francisco is a fantastic city. One of the best in the world.

Oh I know that after this post there will people who want to beat up San Francisco- knock yourself out- we have plenty of problems- I know of no city that has no problems. But San Francisco is a fantastic city, and there are thousands and thousands of great kids being raised in San Francisco right now.

actually it would look a lot more like the sweatshops of Bangladesh with most Americans subsisting on less than a dollar a day. You would have no legal rights as a worker, you would have no social safety net, you would have no access to health care, you would have no safety standards, the rivers and streams would be full to toxic waste as would the air we breath. You would have no idea what additives have been put into your food and you would have no legal recourse if the products you bought caused you grave injury because they were loaded with toxins.

That is the world that the Right Wing ALEC inspired Reactionary Right would bring you.

Well let's break this down here "without Democrats"

Those nasty public schools would be gone. In their place would be corporate schools, teaching corporate philosophy, religion, and obedience to authority. If you cannot afford those schools, there are farm jobs.
We don't need no stinkin' art or museums. That's all liberal crap. We kill the animals for sport, not cage them in a zoo...fool.....
Whos' gonna pay for those parks? Ain't no liberals around to pay for or build them. The beach will be an industrial port. There will be no parks.
Silly liberal. Freedom can only be measured by how much $$$$$ you have. All that other stuff doesn't matter. When it comes to money, the ends justify the means, who has time for those stupid liberal moral nuisances.
It's a cesspool of liberal filth. You all seem to believe that "doing your own thing" is good. You all need to shut the heck up and act like everyone else white, rich and christian
Yea...so sez you...but you're a liberal. You need to get rid of them nasty democrats and let our conservative dicktator rule over you good and proper, like they do in KKKansas.

San Francisco is great if you're rich, but the middle class can't afford to live there because the cost of living is too high.

And that's what liberal Democrats are doing to the entire state of California.

I left California so I could afford to buy a home. You should not have to be rich to buy a starter house, but in California that's the way it is.

As the republican party is the exclusive party of the oligarchy, if you get rid of the democrats, then S.F. will be the perfect place for the oligarchy.

    So what's the complaint?

The rich in San Francisco are almost exclusively liberal Democrats and this is also true in New York, Los Angeles, Boston and Chicago. It is a lie to say Democrats are against the rich. All the leaders and big contributors to the Democrat party are billionaires and millionaires.

    I see.

    The rest of us...reservations?
