Anyway, these perps don't exactly seem like the type that will inspire much sympathy.

I am sure that they will be prosecuted to the fullest, although I am not sure if they will face incarceration (depending on the local jail capacity).

But, if they are sentenced to jail, it will be well-deserved.

In am sure that such a high-profile case like this (and any subsequent developments) will be monitored with increased scrutiny.

The law here requires 3 feet of lateral clearance for a motor vehicle to pass a bicycle, or the motorist must stay behind the bicycle until 3 feet of clearance is available. Beyond an intent to commit a felony there's the tort side of it:

The more safety equipment a bicyclist has, such as a flag, flashing daylight tail lights, daylight flashing headlight, helmet, etc., the more sympathetic a civil jury will be in giving a big award, perhaps all that the motorist has. For a bicyclist victim riding in the dark with no safety equipment, not so much, because they bring it upon themselves.

 

This is why every person that can do legally should carry concealed. That is life threatening.
