A president should be allowed to profit from his presidency just as a murderer should be allowed to profit from his actions.

While in office I disagree. Think about it for a moment he could change policies for selfish reasons. He is supposed to work for us as president and profiting and changing policies for his own benifit would not be considered working for the ppl.
For instance say that without a doubt that the story about him pushing the military flights to stay in his Denmark hotel that would be costing us as taxpayer more money. That is wrong on so many levels.

Trump hotels in Washington promise foreign diplomats direct access to the president in exchange for staying. It can't be proven that Trump ordered this so it can't be considered an emolument.

All presidents become rich after they leave office, selling books, lectures etc.

That's one thing, but to profit while president, is altogether another.

It was never okay before Trump was president to profit from the presidency while in office.

    Why is it now?

Before Trump was president, no republican or democrat would have ever asked that question. It was generally understood one doesn't use the office of the presidency for personal gain. It's even in the constitution, which is why no one asked it, it's understood.

and there's a reason, because we don't want presidents making domestic foreign policy based on personal gain choices.

That's why it's in the constitution

so, why are you asking it now?

I was not aware that was the rule.

I honestly don't see how that can be regulated. Nothing would prevent a POTUS from skirting any rule by simply using the products and services of his friends and family. It would be the same problem.

I answered this in another post in which you asked. I didn't know it was a rule, but I don't see how it can be regulated either. Clearly, we are also dealing with a question of ethics. But, how can it be regulated?
