From a Russian point of view, Putin may be the best thing for that country since sex and peanut butter. From our or others point of view, we may look at Putin as a really bad man, someone who needs to be reigned in. It's like how a lot of Republicans and Democrats look at each other, evil they are in one or the other eyes.

 

Yes. Putin is a monster. But starting a war with Russia is not the way to deal with him. Upfront diplomacy with Russia while shining a light on their actions to their people is the way to go.
As far as fighting terror, we should fight side by side with the Russians.

It's not only the left that knows Putin is evil and a dictator. What you see lately with the Trumpeizdas drooling and kissing the butt of Putin is an anomaly because of the fact that the Russians hacked into a US political party's site and the implication that Russia influenced the election. Trumpeizdas just like LICE Trump have an over exaggerated ego and just the allegation or suggestion that someone helped LICE get elected causes Trumpeizdas to act likecSnowflakes. So instead of condemning our enemy Russia the Trumpeizda Snowflakes attack anyone who tells the truth - the truth is that Russia attempted to influence our election.

In addition to lots of excellent responses here, I just wanted to add a few points:

1. The Russians absolutely do not trust the anonymity of surveys (and for good reasons too), they won't criticize their totalitarian government out of fear that it may end up on their FSB record and be used against them at some point of time, ruin their careers or worse.

2. There is no free media in Russia left, they are bombarded by pro-Putin propaganda 24/7, basically they are hopelessly brainwashed.

3. The Russians from their birth are brought up on the concept of the greatness and victimhood of Russia and the sacrifice for the "motherland". They will take "dirt poor but feared, proud and important" Russia over the opposite any day and that's what Putin gave them.

4. Stalin had a much higher approval rating, basically due to the #1,2,3 above. That did not make him a good guy, did it?

Everyone has changed my mind. My understanding of Russia is not what I thought it was. I am starting to view Putin as an evil person who want's to total power over his people. Thanks to everyone for your responses and giving me a better understanding of Putin.

Vladimir Putin rose through the Secret Police. As deputy to the mayor of St Petersburg, he presided over the systematic looting of Russian "privatization" efforts.

He took that act to Moscow and maneuvered himself into a position as Boris Yeltsin's right hand man, and then proceeded to throw his new boss under the bus.

He is a modern day Tsar. He is every bit as ambitious and bent on conquest as Stalin was.

Trump is playing right into his hands.

There is little doubt that Putin's ultimate aim is the restore Russia to the head of an empire that stretches from the German border to the Pacific, restoring the Soviet Union, or the Russian Empire.
