I don't know. I buy booze and smokes and all things pork from a Muslim run check out line all the time and she never has a problem with it, nor do any of the Muslim owned convenience stores that make a killing on alcohol, tobacco, and illicit paraphernalia. Some people just want to be offended. Perhaps I will apply to be an Anti-death penalty executioner some day so I can get paid to do nothing ;)

But then aren't you saying that Muslims deserve special privileges? If everyone who came to the U.S. did that, would the U.S. even exist? But then again maybe that's what you want?

    Yup.

False comparison. One is the requirement of federal and state laws. The other is a store employee whining for the sake of whining. You don't want to sell bacon to paying customers? Get a job where you don't ever have to deal with bacon. It's that simple.

It should be more concerned with accomodating it's customers.

See, no matter what else people say, you keep playing the race card. Perhaps the people using it are projecting. See what I did there?

    Absolutely!

It has the exact same impact on customers. You just don't like the reason they are doing it.

If their profits suffer, I promise you, they will stop accommodating employees in this way.

They aren't required to accomodate their employees in this way, nor do I think they should be.

I keep playing it because it happens to be the case.

Of course it is not a good business model if the shop is in a minority Muslim area but in a majority Muslim area then it would be a good model as that will encourage other Muslims to shop there.

But this is irrelevant. The point of the OP is to attack Muslims. If it were vegetarians till operators that were allowed to miss out meat products hardly anyone would even look at the OP let alone would be commenting. Very few posts in this thread have been about the policy, the majority of posts contain attacks at the religion

But that's not really what's happening:

Yeah, that's REALLY putting the customers first, isn't it? Smart move, Marks & Spencer - you've probably alienated a number of customers that will likely spend their money elsewhere. Why bother going somewhere only be told by the people you're paying to serve you that they don't want to serve you? I think a poster elsewhere said that if that happened to them, they'd just put the merchandise down on the table and walk out. Heck, so would I. You want me to have another staffer serve me? Great, I'll find this other staffer at another store.

It's one thing to open a vegetarian store and politely tell shoppers no, you can't buy a sirloin steak here, or a halal restaurant where you can't order a BLT. It's quite another when you stock items your customers want to buy that the hired staff pulling a paycheck from the very people who are paying their wages won't sell you. It may not be arrogant, but it's darn close to it.

Another way of looking at it is that the people saying it's an attack on Islam, with you yourself being the sole exception as far as I can see, seem unable to appreciate the difference between the two or even know that there IS a difference - so they play the race card with the nuance and subtlety of a rhino. They may not have the intelligence to do otherwise. At least you comprehend that there are differing reasons for not agreeing with this policy besides "You hate Muslims!" and I applaud you for that.

You're funny. You are right---I'm from Oklahoma. Smack in the Bible Belt where the only businesses who close on Sunday are the ones who want too. Its strange that in countries that are hardly Christian, government will force businesses to close on Sunday. Though I have to say...we do that in regards to Liquer stores....:)

And customer service is king here. To inconvenience a customer because one of our employees has spiritual needs....is not acceptable. That would almost be like an employee demanding that an employer give him/her Sunday off...OR ELSE! That doesn't happen here. If you want Sunday off you take responsability and work out a trade with the other employees or you work at one of the many Christian companies that do close on Sunday. To assume everyone should cater to make sure a muslim's or a Christian's spiritual needs are met--is irresponsible.

But you would agree that a company is within its rights to offer such an accommodation to their employees, right?

You don't think that the government should have a law against it, do you?

Ultimately their customers will decide if the policy remains in effect.

This begs the question: Why would one accept a particular job if one believes that some of its fundamental duties are inconsistent with one's religious beliefs?

In a similar vein, I have heard of some fundamentalist Christians who feel uncomfortable about working in a convenience story that seels beer and/or cigarettes; the proper response to which, in my opinion, is simply to decline any employment there...

Me too. I'd shop there and would love it unless I wanted to buy pork or beer then I`d just go shomewhere else so I didn`t have to take the chance I`d have to wait around in a line up because there was a Muslim clerk doing nothing in another line.

Seriously though, I highly doubt this is the result of individuals but rather some organization that pushed this as most Muslims wouldn`t have a problem with selling this stuff so I certainly wouldn`t take it out on the clerks nor the store which is merely attempting to service all complainants. On the other hand, the store should show some gonads and just refuse the change on the bais of they don`t change for frivolous desires from small groups.

I can't figure out how such a policy of inconveiencing a large segment of customer base could benefit a business.

islamists, communists, fascists, socialists and progressives on the left and right are all possessed of the same benevolent arrogance and the same desire to have their very best intentions imposed upon others.

Let's get down to the solution.
If Arabs don't want to handle pork or alcohol, let them peacefully return to their 52 countries ( soon the number will update to 54 after
Syria's devide ) and sell halal only.
    Simple as that.

Marks + Spencer s is Jewish own and pro-Zionist. Its sales and profits have been dropping over last five years , Few years ago it ceased displaying Made in Israel labels on its merchandise, I'm sure over the years M + S must have employed thousands of Muslims , this is the first time a Muslim has objected ,

A couple days ago - Jewish Chronicle :: reported :

"Marks & Spencer say Jewish staff do not have to handle pork

    http://www.thejc.com/news/uk-news/11...ve-handle-pork

A M&S spokesperson said: “We recognise that some if our employees practise religions that restrict food or drink they can handle, or mean they cannot work at certain times.

“M&S promotes an environment free from discrimination and so, where specific requests are made, we always make reasonable adjustments to accommodate them, whilst ensuring high levels of customer service.”

Marks & Spencer has confirmed that Jewish employees do not have to serve pork products at tills to its customers, if it goes against their religious beliefs.

The chain confirmed that, in the same way a Muslim member of staff could refuse to handle pork and alcohol, a Jewish employee could decline to sell pork sausages, bacon rashers and sea-food.

A Jewish employee does not have to handle M&S pork sausages

The spokesperson said that a Jewish employee could also opt not to work on Shabbat.

The store chain was founded by Polish-Jewish refugee Michael Marks and Thomas Spencer in the late 19th century.

    ======

    Today Daily Telegraph reports :

"M&S apology over Muslim staff policy

Marks and Spencer says shoppers won't be refused alcohol by staff as it claims a failure to follow internal policy led to a shopper being told to queue elsewhere because a Muslim worker couldn't serve them alcohol

Customers at Marks and Spencer will not be refused alcohol or pork by Muslim staff after the store reacted to a massive backlash by customers.

Thousands of shoppers threatened to boycott the retailer after Marks and Spencer said it would allow Muslim staff to refuse to sell pork and alcohol because it was against their religious beliefs.

But now Marks and Spencer has apologised and said that Muslim staff who did not want to handle these products would not man tills and would work in other roles such as in clothing or in the bakery.

The issue was revealed after customers at a London branch of Marks and Spencer were told they would have to use another till because the assistant would not be able to serve them pork or alcohol.

At the time Marks and Spencer said staff could refuse to sell these items, based on their religious beliefs.

Yes, it's a bit like how pharmacists in America can refuse to hand out birth control.

If an employer wants to accommodate religious quirks, that's their business, but personally, I'd want all of my employees to simply do their jobs.

Right on point. This is not about Islam. It is about anyone of any religion who thinks they can take a job as a cashier and then dictate to others they can not come in front of them with certain kinds of food because of their religion. That is bull no matter what religion you are or what belief you have.

The above poster has summarized the issue. Please do not turn this into a Muslim issue. I know plenty of Muslims like this Jew and many Christians and atheists and Wiccans and whatever else you want to call us and we think this is friggin nutz. The person upset has a right to be. Its pure bs.

I have often in the past covered for gentile friends on certain holidays and vice versa. Its basic courtesy you bet and lol yes we all get paid. Seriously though, its common courtesy.

I have in the past covered for people with kids when mine were grown. If they don't abuse it I would do it. Common courtesy is infectious. You treat people the way you want to be treated and you would be surprised. Isn't it friggin nutz that the one thing all religions preach is that golden rule and people have so much problems following it.

I am happy for Christians to celebrate Christmas. Oh hell know its technically a pagan holiday and Christ if anything would have been born in March, April, May, etc. on and on.

So what. If its important for people and its part of their values and it brings them together and makes them think good things and cherish peace, then gawd dahm it I support it.

I got no problems with Jesus. I got problems with people in the name of Jesus,Moses,Muhammed, Krishna, Sidharta, Lao Tzu, Confucious, anyone, who distorts their names and teachings to justify hatred.

Oh I like Aesop so guess that makes me an Aesopian. I have no agenda. I just want everyone cherishing their time on this planet and being grateful. Oh hell it would be nice if we could do it every moment as some Buddists say, but its nice to see you gentiles at this time of year celebrating.

Lol the only thing I do not get is why you gentiles put hair nets on your hams.

Also Chris Kringle is a whitey but he has so many cardio-vascular issues he's technically pink.
