Considering the results dems are producing, reps don't need someone all that great. Trump also owns the dems who work to keep his name relevant free of charge.

Trump comes with too much baggage. There is one choice here

 

Desantis is going to play it safe for now and look for an opening. Maybe if Trump gets indicted he'll make his announcement then and try to play it as a reluctant Cincinnatus thing -- Republicans have been looking for one of those for a while now -- saying he has to run because Trump can't win now but still publicly defending Trump and maybe even running on a promise of pardoning him. He probably won't go negative against Trump, making Trump look all the more desperate because going neg is all Trump has. Desantis would beat Trump in the primaries. However, the general would be a problem. Trump will pull out all of the stops to sabotage Desantis, and some of his followers will just stay home and not vote if Trump loses the primaries. If by some miracle Trump doesn't run, Desantis stands a very good chance of winning the general.

 

I don't think there is one characteristic that screams humble to me, wrt DeSantis.

He definitely lives on donations to pay his legal fees, but he doesn't need donations to run. The press covers him extensively every time he says some racist nonsense or blurts out the most outrageous lies against his opponents. I don't think that will carry him to the Presidency, but it will certainly be enough to get him nominated. Assuming he's not in prison.

I think Trump's lies can take on Murdoch, DeSantis and... anybody in the Republican Party
