Could really threaten an industry that Americans have invested in so greatly. I wonder if protectionism will arise and Americans will give up their free market principles, or if they'll return to a 2009 trend where it seemed impossible to stop the increasing trend of Asian and European autos. These are very ambitious goals by the companies, and rarely are they wrong.
Japan is a good country with freedom and democracy so I can't really fault them for anything here. The market will decide. Though the US has cheated a bit by putting ours on welfare.
American cars have been unreliable in my experience. I won't give them another chance, especially since the big three are prisoners of the United Auto Workers. German, Japanese and Korean cars seem ok.
All countries practice protectionism to one extent or another including Japan. The US needs more protectionism from low-wage countries like China and India particularly. Japan maybe less so but whatever it takes to protect US industries and American jobs is what America should do.
Their companies are on "welfare" every day with national healthcare, so companies costs are much lower. Plus, Japan does ENORMOUS protection of its markets from outsiders. We have been suckers.
