I think you're right but either disease can be fatal particularly to those who hadn't been exposed as was the case the New World peoples.
Oh absolutely and if I believe rightly it was their Tlaxcalan neighbours that Cortes initially allied himself with.
Impressive.
I'm aiming for Arabic and Chinese myself although I can't claim to be of mixed heritage.

Yes and I would suspect that 100% of the Japanese public support the fact that their hard work is paying for a man who in essence does pretty much nothing except stand as a symbol for the unity of the people (whatever that means), and officiate as the high priest ( Idk the Japanese equivalent) of the national religion. Kinda reminds me of Marcus Lepidus... however it just seems stupid to defend an institution that has long since passed its expiry date, but people will have their idols I guess.

The emperor has the hardest job possible. He has no personal life. His character is bended under extreme protocoll and traditions. He never has vacation nor a personal stand. I'm not sure if you are aware of that. The emperor repesents the entire nation and as a unifying force. The emperor is also important in foreign politics since he can break ice that diplomats can't. I find it ironic that you would give up your very own essence to save money, but you come from the anglosphere so i understand this idea.

Since you dont know what unifying force means, the emperor has the ability to let people unite with each other, you could see that as we had the earthquake and tsunami. New Zealand has no real culture and your people run like chicken in case of desaster. There were even lootings and chaos at the earthquake in christchurch...

You may not like it, but there are other cultures and viewpoints in the world and you are not center of the world.

Uh nope. That 'pragmatism' is how you perceive yourself. Don't presume to speak for the Japanese population; I doubt that many would concur with your absurd nationalism. Trust me, Japan is nothing special and no more or less unique than any other nation despite your bombast and chest beating.

Your 'emperor' (curious term for someone with no empire to rule over), is like our queen-a constitutional monarch who has no power and is in his position only because the people consent to it. His duties are no more onerous than purely ceremonial and suggesting that his 'job' is hard is a joke.

Yea mate I'm pretty well aware that New Zealand isn't the centre of the world, nowhere in my post did I claim such a thing. New Zealand has no real culture...yea that's just pulling something out of your ass and its totally ok for you to understand the anglosphere (western?) perspective, and for me, the foreign devil, to not have a clue about Japanese culture.

Yea tell me how he unified the people of Japan, told everyone that everything's gonna be alright, I'll pray to the Shinto gods maybe they'll look down in pity. Start again- that's what you have the prime minister for duh. The people of Japan are industrious enough without having to have some outdated monarch tell them to get back to work.

I'll concede that the emperor may have a diplomatic role, although your constitution pretty much limits his role in this area too, but again doesn't Japan have a foreign affairs branch for this kind of thing. The only reason he's good at breaking the ice, is probably because he's a novelty, a relic that amuses foreign diplomats.

You're emperors powers are even weaker than the Governor Generals powers in New Zealand, and I think the institution should be abolished in New Zealand!

The emperor never has a break, gosh he must divine indeed. Amaterasu's progeny.

The Japanese people are cool, I meet quite a few from Fukuoka since its the sister city of Auckland.

A common theme in all cultures is adaptability; the emperor tries but he can't when he's restricted by the very thing that ironically keeps him to some degree relevant to modern Japan; the constitution. I would say he has the most frustrating position within Japan, but definitely not the hardest.

Your racism, chauvism and hate is not worth to be commented.

I have zero trust in elected politicians. They can never unite the nation. They only stand for their voters. All elected politicians are corrupted to the core and 0 trustworthy and i´m glad that we have a moral authority in Japan which is honored higher than any politician. A prime minister in Japan has no authority for the people. Most PM have 0 charisma and are simple gangsters. Do you honestly believe that a PM can have the charisma that the emperor has? Most PM here can be happy to stay at least one year in office.

When the great earthquake hit Japan, it was our emperor who gave the people strength. That we look forward and stand together as a nation.

Thats the power i talk about and that you don´t understand. One word of him and the masses follow.

The thing you claim is incredible insulting but understandable. You come from a country with no honor and no culture. What is New Zealand? What makes it unique? I´m not talking about its great nature but its culture. You have nothing unique. IN fact New Zealand is so sad it needs Lord of the Rings as unifying force.

But i understand your mindset. You have 0 connection to your country. You are an alien there. You are not a Maori, so you will ever be a foreigner in your own birthplace. And that cultural void is filled with nonsense and trash like Lord of the Rings. You may elect Arwen as your next President. Or propably Micky Mouse.

The only culture New Zeland has is Maori culture. The rest is replaceable.

The Maori don't really exist any more as they're integrated.
But Kiwis have made their own culture it just not as sophisticated or and pronounced as Japan's which you yourself may not necessarily appreciate.

Having lived in New Zealand I know them fairly well and have helped rebuild Christchurch and was also present during the last 6 pointer earthquake.

So in my view their culture has grown quickly considering how young a country it is.

I don´t see any culture there. Its more like "existing" and consuming. I see no deeper sense there. Its a nation without inner strength, inner sense or unity. People there have no history and no culture and no connection to the land.

You could say that about most parts of the world.
The Kiwis do have a history although it's not particularly big.

In my experience Kiwis are developing their own culture and identity. They have artists, actors/films which contribute to their own culture and if you talk to most Kiwis you'll find that they feel strongly attached to their home and the history of the land.

To be frank, I think culture means different things to different people; what may seem small to you may be big to others and vice versa.

They respect it. Nothing like having your cities flattened and your people half starved to death to get you to respect a constitution written by anybody.

Granted, I wouldn't want to fly half way round the world for the culture.
Good choice though; the best stuff is in the south, Fiorldands, Southern Alps e.t.c.

Politicians stand for their voters - well I never! That's their job. It's what they do - you know stand for election on a set of policies and the people vote for them or reject them based on these policies. It's called democracy. I'd just thought I'll let you in on that. I've got some more news for you. Not all politicians are "corrupted to the core"or "gangsters" (at least here in the West). I feel sorry for you if that's the situation in Japan.

In actual practical terms (leaving aside your Emperor's supernatural abilities), what did he actually do by way of giving you strength? Kryptonite, perhaps?

Finally, you seem to be implying that the Japanese are the only people that display acts of solidarity during a crisis. I've got news for you, others do too, whether they be American's during Katrina or the Thais during their tsunami.

Akuma....I still see you are making friends! LOL!!!

By the way...LEAVE MICKEY MOUSE OUT OF IT!!!

The people of New Zealand are GOOD PEOPLE....some of the nicest I have ever met and I have been around.

Now....the Japanese Emperor during WWII had little power as Hirohito basically did as he was told by the Japanese Army Leadership who had essentially taken control of Japan and all of Japanese Armed Services and no where was this more shown to be a fact then when the Japanese Army Leadership FORCED Japanese Navy Admiral Nagumo's outspoken statements against Admiral Yamamoto's plan to attack Pearl Harbor and in reality neither Admiral wanted to attack the United States as both knew Japan could not win such a war.

The Japanese ARMY Leadership forced the Japanese Navy to attack....and the Emperor was also FORCED by the Army to go along with this plan.

Which is a great example of why a dictatorship is a bad thing. And why democracy is a good thing.

The Emperor is basically a placebo...even Akuma believes this. The Emperor has no substance. He is a figurehead. He "unites" the people by basically feeding them an illusion.

You just outlined exactly why it is dangerous to give such a figurehead any real power. This is why all political power needs to be vested in the masses.

Which is exactly what they should be doing. The voters are the ones who should have the final say on what the government does. The nation belongs to them...not to any monarchy. I think even the Japanese believe this...which is why they have made no effort to give the Emperor any real political power.

Politicians are simply a means to an end. Their function is to do what the voters want them to do. As long as they perform that function, they are not corrupt. If they become corrupt, it is the duty of the voters to remove them.

I'm accused of being a racist, a chauvinist and a hater, that's rich. Judging from your previous posts you are the one in fact with the superiority complex and your comments are borderline delusional, look up a dictionary next time instead of slandering sloganeering nonsense. I accept New Zealand's not the greatest country in the world, but if I gave you that impression well it just reinforces what I'm saying.

You simply say this and contradict your platform at the same time. If you don't trust the politicians, why then do you elect them in the first place? Granted, he might have zero charisma but if you're looking for just charisma in a leader you should probably elect Shoko Asahara.

I'm sure he's a nice person but he probably wasn't the only one who visited at the disaster. This awe of the emperor is just reinforced by the fact that he's not privy to the ridicule of everyday politicians because his position demands he not interfere with politics at all. It's easy to be in awe of people who never have to get their hands dirty for the nations' sake. I bet you if he was ruling right now they'd probably be annoyed at his sudden descent from the imperial palace.

Yeah you know I think you're absolutely right- the masses just follow him don't they? How'd that work out for Japan in the war? You're just being insensitive to your own country's dead now.

Perhaps, but you keep playing the hypocrite. Japan is the shining example of honor and culture is it? With your samurai history I'd probably fling that notion right out the window. Yes I may come from a country that lacks such things but don't think it makes your nation look any better. And...
do you even know what that means? So it's honorable to be dishonorable sometimes in Japan? Yeah way to go with the realpolitick except you hate realpolitick so...

Albeit I'll concede that I am a foreigner and so I can never truly appreciate Maori culture since they are the indigenous peoples, but by that same logic you are also a foreigner in your birthplace, because the Ainu are the indigenous peoples of Japan, so how come you don't reflect their culture. Hypocrite!
And on a side note, I'd rather have Arwen as the next president of New Zealand than have the emperor of Japan rule for a thousand more years. At least she'll be elected.

I saw no unity in america during catrina. I saw looting, gang rapes and broke down of civil oder. Behavior like that would be impossible in Japan. It is funny that you bring Thailand up. Their king has the same position in their believes as our emperor has for us. As for politicians, all policians are liars, corrupted and criminals. Most if not all are members of Yakuza and i trust no one of them. How could i? They are no different to me. The emperor stands above such things. My grandparents never go to any election, my parents never go to any election and i dont go to any election. Its a waste of time.

Katrina was a CLUSTER F@$# for certain!!!

But Akuma....right after the Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan....and you know as well as I do that for DECADES the Japanese Government was warned that it did not have anywhere NEAR the level of Trained Rescue Teams, Rescue Dogs, Pre-Positioned Supplies, Air Lift Capabilities, Mobile Medical Services...etc...to handle this Earthquake and Tsunami and the United States Geological Service....USGS.....WARNED Japanese Leaders YEAR AFTER YEAR with reports that Japan was highly vulnerable for such a catastrophic event as what happened and yet the Japanese did NOTHING to be even 30% Prepared for this event.

So....in this case....sure there were not a great number of Japanese Looting but their Government had LOOTED THE MONEY of the Japanese spending it on Emergency Systems where in some cases Japanese Companies had enough of individual specific supplies as certain Japanese Companies were awarded MASSIVE contracts to make emergency equipment or supplies that were either not needed or had no way to be transported to effected areas.

You should look into your own Governments Internal Report of just WHY so much money was spent on certain emergency supplies to a point in some cases Japan had 50 Times the amounts of some supplies and only 5% of other supplies necessary for such a disaster.

The FACT remains....if the United States Navy and Military had not been there already a possible additional 10,000 Japanese could have died.

I understand how the Japanese Leadership thinks and acts and you are RIGHT....they are corrupt....but this level of corruption is INEXCUSABLE!!!

How does a country as Technically advanced as Japan not have the ability to get supplies to 35% of it's own country?

How is it possible a wealthy country like Japan which exists and KNOWS it is in a very prone to Earthquakes and Tsunami's Zone not have a proper plan to both have Mobile or Ship Hospitals and not have any ability to get their own people to such Medical Facilities?

With the exception of Katrina the United States has always done an exceptional job doing disaster relief.

The Katrina debacle was sickening and will never happen again....as that debacle was all about Politics and inter agency in-feuding which has since been fixed.

You have to remember that the United States exists in an area of the world where THE GREATEST NUMBER OF EXTREMELY STRONG STORMS IMPACT LAND AND EFFECT PEOPLE.

The U.S. is home to more extreme weather than any other country on Planet Earth and we deal with it....so in all these years one mistake....as bad as it was....but still our record is not that bad.

But Japan.....Japan responded to that disaster like a 3rd World Country.

And ONLY because of the U.S. Military and U.S. Navy Carrier Battle Group and Hospital Ships and Choppers and a great number of other capabilities the U.S. Military brought to bear to save Japanese lives...only because we were there that this disaster did not become Completely Catastrophic in it's Death Toll.

If I were YOU....I would want those in charge of Developing and Supplying Japanese Nationwide Emergency Service to have their HEADS CHOPPED OFF!!!

Bolden.

What a joke.

He was no good when he worked at TRW, he never got any better.

That's not true. Several attempts have been made to land on the sun, but at night, of course.

Care to explain how your grades were in your astrodynamics courses? Inquiring minds that have taken those courses want to know.

Yeah, it's sooooo difficult to get an estimate of their size from their apparent magnitude, and from that, since G is a universal constant, to determine a credible estimate of the surface gravity.

It's sooo difficult only geniuses like Newton can come up with the algebra to figure it out...but wait! He wrote the formula down. You can find it one the Internet, even.

Who elected him, from where does his authority descend?

What if he turns out to be completely useless, like Hirohito was, how do you get rid of him? What if he's insane, like Kim Il Jung, how do you get rid of him?

No, is that a special euphemism for parts best not seen? Saw the Queen Victoria Day parade twice, in Victoria, Canada, simply because the ship happened to be in that town on that weekend in two different years.

What can be more boring that some birth-right monarch?

Hitler had that power, too.

Primitives react that way to their masters, not free men.

This, from the Heir to Pearl Harbor.
