The asylum seeker debate is likely to dominate when federal Parliament resumes this week in the wake of the deadly boat capsize off Christmas Island.

Investigations are now underway after a boat carrying 200 asylum seekers overturned north of Christmas Island on Thursday, sparking a three-day search and recovery mission.

Australian authorities rescued 110 people and found 17 bodies, but up to 90 people are feared dead.

Up to 70 asylum seekers remain unaccounted for but it is unlikely their bodies will ever be found.

After the disaster politicians from both major parties appealed for a compromise on asylum seeker policy.

The major parties have been in a stalemate for months after talks broke down over offshore processing.

Labor politicians and Coalition backbenchers have called for the Opposition to reconsider support for the Government's so-called Malaysia solution.

Foreign Minister Bob Carr saying "the time is now" to put the plan in place, but chances of a compromise appear to be slim.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, meanwhile, is refusing to back down on his hardline on offshore policy.

He has reiterated that the , saying "it is not the job of the Opposition to support bad policy".

He says the Government will have to negotiate with the Greens or take the drastic action in Parliament of making asylum policy a matter of confidence and putting the legislation to a vote.

The Greens maintain they will not support any offshore processing plan.

"Offshore processing is an absolute rejection of our obligations under the refugee convention," Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

Meanwhile, Customs yesterday intercepted another asylum seeker boat carrying 60 people, south-west of Christmas Island.

Those passengers will be taken to Christmas Island for health and security checks.

The Refugee Council of Australia's Paul Power says nothing will change unless leaders start looking at the region and what is driving people to board boats.

"Much of the discussion doesn't go beyond the political ramifications for Australia," he said.

"We need Australian political leaders to actually be looking seriously at the issues that are happening in the region and the lack of effective protection solution for refugees across the Asia Pacific region which is actually behind the movement of people by boats to Australia."

    Dual investigations

Police have meanwhile begun dual investigations into last week's asylum seeker boat capsize.

Customs called off the search and recovery operation late yesterday, directing the HMAS Larrakia to return to Christmas Island.

WA Police and Australian Federal Police have now launched coronial and criminal investigations into the tragedy.

The bodies recovered so far are being stored in a makeshift morgue on Christmas Island.

WA Police are leading the coronial investigation and forensic officers have already begun the grim task of identifying the dead.

Police have also conducted preliminary interviews with the 110 survivors, most of whom are being held at the Phosphate Hill detention centre.

Australian Federal Police have confirmed two Indonesian crew members will be the focus of their criminal investigation.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is nothing to gain, and too much to lose by not taking immediate action to stop the boats. We need a federal govt with the guts to do something about this mess, hopefully before any more lives are lost. We need to take affirmative action, stop the boats now, before more lives are lost.

Abbott wants to turn the boats around, but this is more risky than allowing them to come here. He can't just turn the boats back, he needs the support of the other MP's - and he won't get it. Both parties will have to reach an agreement on this one.

Paul Power is another do-gooder idiot. Any moron can see what’s “driving” people to board boats coming to Australia is these opportunistic financial refugees willing to pay $10,000 for a ticket to people smugglers to sneak into Australia through the backdoor.

I’m sick to death of do-gooders blaming Australia and everyone else for these people who actively engage in criminal activity by paying people smuggler $10,000 per ticket to smuggle them illegally through Australia’s backdoor.

These people know the conditions of these boats before they depart, and have heard the stories of other boats sinking and not making to Australia; so if they are willing to risk their lives & the lives of their children coming to Australia through the backdoor, then they should be held accountable and responsible for their own actions and behaviour - no one else.

I’m an adult human being, and I don’t expect anyone to be accountable or responsible for my behaviour or actions, and neither should anyone else with an ounce of common sense.

As with an illegal activity, if there was ‘no’ consumer demand, there would be ‘no’ trade, so the buck stops with the people buying the tickets.

Australia can instantly STOP the boats by immediately declaring they will not be processing or accepting any more applications for asylum from people arriving by boat, and these individuals be returned to their place of departure regardless of circumstance.

Once we have stopped these opportunistic backdoor arrivals, we can then increase out intake of genuine refugees patiently waiting for relocation in refugee camps. Lets welcome and give a fair go to the genuine people doing the right thing waiting for relocation in refugee camps, instead of pandering to these financial opportunistic illegal’s, who think that $10,000 can buy their way into Australia through the backdoor.

These backdoor jumper also have to start considering that when they consciously pay $10,000 to gain entrance into Australia under false pretences, they are taking away the opportunity from someone else waiting patiently in a refugee camp also wanting to start a life in Australia.

Its time the do-gooders started offering more compassion and sympathy for the genuine individuals and families living in destitute refugee camps who are not being offered homes in Australia, because of the cue jumping “boaties” who have the money to buy tickets into Australia through the backdoor.

Turning boats around is only one part of the Liberal policy on the issue. I agree though turning them around will not do much on its own, but considering they are intercepted closer to Indonesia then Australian territory we simply need an arrangement with Indonesia that states whenever one of these boats arrives at the dotted line in the ocean they have to go to the nearest port....meaning we are allowed to tow them to Indonesia or put your own ppl on board to drive it back.

This problem will never be solved for two reasons:
    a) Gillard and Abbott are as stubborn as one another and will not yield an inch
    b) We pander to Indonesia...always have...always will...any arrangements for asylum seekers, if Indonesia are involved in any way
will be on Indonesia's terms, not ours...

Besides, it takes us two years to adjust a roundabout, so what chance have we of a solution for the asylum seekers....
Wasnt the QE II built from start to finish in two years....????

Just think for a minute. If the boats had been turned back five years ago, they would have all but stopped comming. Hundreds of lives would have been saved, and we could have put the resources thus far expended to better use. Don`t forget either, Abbott isn`t in government, the Greens / ALP coalition is.

What the hell is wrong with Australian politicians whereby they think they have to be the “nurse-maids” for people paying $10,000 per ticket to come to Australia through the backdoor - wake up, and stop being a pack of idiots. The vast majority of these illegal’s travel through seven other countries before arriving in Indonesia, except the ones who fly into Indonesia directly. Not once do these illegal’s ask any country they travel though for assistance or help, nor to they contact or approach any Australian Embassy located in those seven countries and ask for asylum and help.

These illegal’s arrive here with NO documentation to support who they are and where they are from and what their true circumstances are. Then we have do-gooders wanting these “unknown” people processed supper fast and released into our communities without the proper background checks done. We have just recently seen the processing system in crisis, whereby “people smugglers” and their families have been caught in Australia who passed themselves off as asylum seekers, and got through Australia’s security processing system.

If the do-gooders want to advocate this sort of stupid incompetent behaviour, then why the hell do need “visas” and identity checks when departing and arriving in Australia in the first place.

There are thousands of illegal’s arriving every week by boat, and these do-gooders think that processing these application can be done in a week or so. The manpower to process is under stress and is not coping - hence the people smugglers slipping through the application processing security net. How many hundreds of millions of tax payers dollars do these do-gooders want to have diverted into processing these illegal’s who have paid to come here through the backdoor.

These illegal’s have engaged in criminal activity by hiring people smugglers, and deceitful enough to believe that a $10,000 ticket will get them to Australia through the backdoor, so we shouldn’t be spending a cent on these people.

These illegal’s are no more fleeing persecution or in fear of their live than I’m a Nigerian housewife. I wonder what garbage and fairy-story Mr HajI Muhammad alias (Mr Rezaie) told the Australia processing board that convinced them her was in fear on his life - must have been a convincing LIE.

So basically, the Australia immigration department just believes what you tell them - what a stupid country Australia has become; deserves everything it gets.

I felt like typing up an analogy, inappropriate given the recent loss of life, but hey we got to accept reality otherwise we're doomed to suffer a cycle on repeat. So its like when a ship gets a leak, there are two things that need to be done, one person needs to get the water out, and the other needs to stop the leak. What we have here is the bucket people are in charge and so the ship just slowly sinks, but they feel good as it goes down because they can say they are helping despite not really achieving anything - until its too late. The problem is its a pain to fix a leak in a boat, and so its always an unpopular job meaning there is plenty of people willing to grab a bucket. Democracy has its weaknesses I guess.

Think of the conditions those people are being sent back to. Saving lives? More like sending them back to be raped and killed.

Yes, I suppose Captain Emad -“people smuggle” and Mr. Rezaie - alias (HajI Muhammad) “people smuggler” were going to be raped and killed on their return

    LOL LOL LOL LOL

I just wonder how many more of these $10,000 “ticket-holders” have concocted the same fairy stories to elicit sympathy for coming to Australia through the backdoor.

Maybe they run courses over there in what to tell the “gullible Aussies” when they arrive, so they will be allowed to stay. LOL

I know “Aussies” like bending over and taking one up the arse, but this a new low even for them, having ‘boaties’ hoodwink them. How dumb-arse and backward can a people get!! LOL LOL LOL

I have a young African guy in my employee, who is smarter than most Australians, as he freely admits this refugee/Asylum business regarding the “boaties” is nothing more than a rort and scam to access Australia lucrative welfare and housing benefits.

Maybe this would explain that when the Government did their own enquiry, over 80% of asylum seekers arriving by boat were still on some form of tax payer welfare benefit up to 5 years and counting.

When you consider a monthly welfare Australian benefit payment would be equivalent to a years wage for some of these “dirt-farmers” and “goat-herders” you can understand why they risk life and limb just to get here, and that it has nothing to do with them being persecuted or in fear for their lives. If you are in fear for your life, you certainly wouldn't travel through seven countries, and stay in another for years before hoping on a boat to travel to another country, and then all of sudden you proclaim you are in fear for your life - what an absolute load of garbage. How the hell can those fools at the immigration processing centre get coned by that nonsense.

I forgot for a moment, they are dumb-arse Aussies working there, who still get coned by Nigerian and Irish con-artists… These were the same morons who let Captain Emad in LOL LOL LOL

Ooooops there goes another one. Over another hundred people drowning in the Indian Ocean trying to get in on the weak border protection policy.

Whats also really sad is how the tv media is presenting the political tension as being about the ALP v LIB stand off on making an agreement, as if somehow its the Libs holding up a process which will stop the boats. The REAL problem is the ALP government has NO policy which will stop the boats..... while the Libs have demonstrated already a policy which works. Yet the tv media still cling to the sinking left point of view and peddle the ALP spin as if its 'news'.

Listening to things like twitter and facebook posts are hilarious, how many ppl trot out the ALP spin blindly believing the lies Juliar Giliard et al rolls out to feed the media and ppl who are scared of Tony Abbott.

I'm glad Australia is over run by people like you, otherwise I reckon I'd be jumpin on a leaky old boat myself!

I think both sides of politics are as guilty as each other of playing games here. It is alright until someone gets hurt.

On one hand we have ALP trying to embarrass the opposition into bi lateral talks all the while making sure it is done their way. Then you have the opposition standing firm because they want it their way. During this childish impass we have people dying. Shameful.

In the end it is a government problem and the only reason Gillard is playing games is because she has no answers. She and the Greens control the senate, so get something through. Had no problem with the carbon tax did they. If they were serious they could fix it. Problem is they have no answers, so they are trying to deflect blame of the situation onto the opposition. This is all happening under her watch, not Abbotts.

Gillard needs to get her act together and solve it before more lives are lost. And not with that ridiculous Malaysian solution..........surely they can do better than that !

The situation we have in Australia is that these do-gooders and their advocacy groups need to wake-up and shut their mouths, and start putting their brains into gear before flapping their lips - especially these idiots form the Greens party who see Australia with a welcome mat and open-door policy for people of completely unknown character accessing Australian communities. Not every refugee/asylum seeker that comes here has a halo over their heads or a bright light shinning from their arse, and its time these do-gooder idiots realised that fact. You never hear these do-gooders offer any explanation as to why over 80% of these boat asylum seekers are still on some form of Australian tax payer funded welfare up to 5 years and counting.

I'm sick of these do-gooders always trying to turn the focus on what Australians have to do in relation to border security or processing these illegal “boaties”. Its time the focus was turned back on these illegal’s themselves and their own behaviour. They actively engage in criminal activity by seeking out people smugglers; whereby they pay $10,000 per ticket to get smuggled illegally into Australia through the backdoor, so they are no angels by a long shot. No one held a gun to their heads and made them board the boats, so whatever happens to them is their own responsibility. I make a decision and take responsibility to drive to work everyday, so if an accident happens, do I then have the right to blame the Government for my own actions and behaviour?

If these “boaties” can afford $10,000 for a ticket on a boat, then why not just “FLY” to Australia for $800? The reason they don’t fly to Australia, is they know they will not be granted asylum in Australia if arrive by plane, because the Australian Immigration will discover they “ARE NOT” who they claim to be.

Not a bad scam, a $10,000 ticket will but you everlasting joy suckling the teat on another countries welfare system forever.

Dullard is just a lying troll, and if she was a member of my family, I would tell her straight out, that she either stops the lies, or don’t come home. Her parents must be so secretly ashamed of her - who’s parents wouldn’t be of a child that tells so many deceitful lies.

It people want to believe the tolls lies and the lies form other politicians covering their own arses, then they are just part of the circus!!

I'm ashamed to call myself an Australian when we direct such hatred at the boat people. These people are human beings, although you wouldn't know it. These people whinge about boat people, but say nothing about the white people who come here by plane and 'forget' to go home. They are the ones who steal our jobs, they are the ones you should be concerned about, but you never hear anything about these people from the Liberals. Why? Because plane people don't have dark skin and aren't Muslims.

The “white people” who fly into Australia are granted entry, because they use their real identity. They might take some Australian jobs, but are also contributing to Australia by paying tax on those jobs.

The “boaties” that come to Australia through the backdoor never use their real identity, and over 80% of them are still suckling on Australian tax payer funded welfare teat up to 5 years and counting, contributing “nothing” to Australia.

Big difference don’t you think? I’m sorry that this is too frighting for you to confront, but it has nothing to do with hatred, and everything to do with facts.

You seem to be a person who advocates for justice, but yet you want to grant people asylum in Australia who have engaged in criminal activity by hiring people smugglers and trying to enter Australia illegally through a backdoor process.

You advocate you want justice for Schapelle Corby because you believe she in innocent, but you also want justice for people who are obviously guilty of engaging in criminal activity by hiring people smugglers and entering Australia by paying $10,000 for a ticket through the backdoor - your way of thinking seems very contradictory & strange.

Maybe your compassion and empathy would be better served by thinking about the genuine people waiting in refugee camps throughout the world who cannot afford the $10,000 ticket to access Australia through the backdoor.

FFS the anger isnt at refugee's its at a illegal immigrants!!!!!! There is a system in place for genuine refugee's and if genuine refugee's choose to bypass it by criminal activity or if illegal immigrants try to enter illegally = it should be no entry fullstop, even if proven to be genuine refugee. If crimes are being committed here or in our neighbours we should not allow entry. How'd they get on the boat, pay criminals? then no entry even if refugee because they are now criminals.

Paying money to criminals and making lies about true identities is illegal, since that is how they gain passage by boat and entry to Australia it is therefore illegal entry by boat to Australia IMO. That's about it really, the only thing complicated about it is the rubbish thrown into the media by the Greens and the ALP in desperate attempts to win sympathy votes from an undereducated mindless Australian public at large, and the left orientated tv media shoving it down everyones throats.

If people with money breaking laws to gain entry into Australia by boat are reducing the rate at which poor people stuck in refugee camps get into Australia, then I think you've got your emotions backwards. I care more for the poor refugee's then the rich ones who can spend thousands of dollars on people smugglers and fake papers. The political left is callious to those poor people because they are out of sight and out of mind, the political left knows they cannot get political mileage from them so instead they make ineffective platforms on this issue for buying votes.... and then have the hypocrisy to spin that the Lib's hate refugee's etc. The Australian political left and their followers are what you probably could more rightfully be ashamed.

It is pure hatred alright! Show us your facts Culldav?

Hahaha......so these people smugglers aren't promoting their service to desperate people!

You are utterly nuts......$10 thousand dollars you say. Why move to Australia, they would be living like kings and queens in their own country with this type of money!

You are clearly just one delusional person with "less than", and i mean less than superficial views.......Actually you are a clown! Culldav, you make sense with a lot of things with all honesty, but this is one issue you do not make sense with!

You're a twit, and I refuse to engage with twit's. But your "boatie" friends ARE paying $10,000 per ticket to access Australia through the backdoor. Your lack of knowledge on this subject, highlights you must be some kid.

    Have a nice day.
