The elections were seen as a test of the KMT's trend of warming relations with the mainland. Looks like polls were right, Taiwan wants it.

    Taiwan facing a pivotal crossroads
Sat, Jan 14, 2012 - While the world’s attention is focused on a rising China amid a seeming decline in the West, Taiwan seems all but forgotten. Yet, the West, and especially the US, ignores the so-called “Taiwan issue” at its peril.

If the CCP wanted to see the PRC advance to the next stage of political evolution it would allow the KMT to run against CCP candidates in local elections.

The ‘status quo’ is just not good enough
Fri, Dec 07, 2012 - The conventional wisdom on Taiwan’s status and its relations with other countries is that the “status quo” needs to be maintained. This adage has permeated official lingo over the past decade, and is often the mainstay of pronouncements by foreign observers.
