    Was smashing down the gate and trespassing illegal? If not, why was what happened at the capitol illegal?

    It was illegal.
    Property damage into a private subdivision.

    Trespass in another story as it doesn’t fit that legal term.

    They also had to have posed an imminent threat, to my knowledge they stayed on the street while the homeowners came into their yard threatening the protestors.
