Would you care to elaborate on the bolded, with maybe an example. The way it's written you are invalidating ALL science, even Gravity. There are ALWAYS exceptions (though no, I can't think of any for Gravity offhand.)

 

We don't know precisely what causes lung cancer or any cancer for that matter.

A correlation is NOT a causation. That is simple logic, of which you are denying.

It would not surprise me (in the least) if his entire "cancer story" is fabricated just to keep his name in the news.

 

I have a theory that heat (meaning "the flow of thermal energy") always flows from hot to cold in any closed system (meaning "a system with defined boundaries"). In other words, entropy (the randomness of a system) always increases.

The null hypothesis (how this theory can be falsified) would be a single example of heat flowing from cold to hot in a closed system. If that were to occur, then the theory would be falsified.

This has not happened as of yet (even though AGW proponents falsely seem to think it is happening), so the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics is still a theory of science.


So, to tie this into my smoking example, the theory there is that smoking causes cancer. The null hypothesis is ONE case in which smoking did not cause cancer. George Burns is one case of a lifelong smoker (from his teens until he died at the ripe old age of 100) who never got any form of cancer. Thus, the theory "smoking causes cancer" has been falsified. According to the theory, George Burns should have gotten cancer.

Except "thermal energy" is not the only kind of energy! There is "potential energy" the energy of position, and "kinetic energy," the energy of motion, and the 3rd Law says there is no temperature at which all motion stops. So no matter how much entropy increases there will always be energy to do work!!!!!

BTW, in his book, "A Brief History Of Time" Hawking gives a brilliant example of the SLoT violating itself!!!!!

I don't see how one smoker not getting cancer "falsifies" the theory.

Frex; why couldn't George Burns have gotten cancer and his body fought it off before it got to the point where it was noticeable. My understanding is that just about everybody "gets" cancer multiple times in their lives but our bodies fight it off before it becomes problematic. Smoking makes our bodies weaker in re cancer but not necessarily always enough that the cancer is able to grow.

George Burns was a tough old bird, not quite as tough as funny or he'd be shooting for 200, but really tough nonetheless.

Read Hawking, he gives an example of matter higher in entropy than the average in the universe getting sucked into a black hole removing it from the total entropy of the universe thus REDUCING the total entropy of the universe.

All matter contains entropy, so what happens when it is dropped into a black hole? Is entropy lost along with it? If so, the total entropy of the universe goes down and black holes would violate the second law of thermodynamics.
Hawking thought that this was fine. He was happy to discard any concept that stood in the way to a deeper truth.
