I am not surprised that Schmidt decided to register as a Democrat after two years as an independent yet I was hoping that he would go back to the Republican Party Why? I hoped that he would have returned to the GOP and been part of the saving the soul of the Republican Party. He admits that he does not agree with a lot of the policy positions of the Democratic Party. He said that the Democratic Party is the party that can save our democratic republic. That only the Democratic Party stand for American liberty. I believe that the Trump attack on the election is what put Schmidt to make that momentous choice. He said he must be a Conservative Democrat now. Schmidt chaired McCains election campaign.

Without name call and without accusations of traitor and without calling Schmidt a Communist do you agree with Steve becoming a Democrat? Or do you agree with me that Steve should have stayed and fixed the Republican Party?

II went fromConservative Democrat to Republican so that colors my opinion.

Hey, I just decided to become a Democrat too! Wait... wait... now I'm in the GOP... wait... now Libertarian.

Be sure to take everything I say very seriously about politics from my new MSNBC job. Wait... now it's FOX... erm CNN, yeah, that's the ticket.

Yes, he said he'd become a one-issue voter and he's voting for democracy.

I think it's a good move. Adding conservative voices strengthens the party. If Trump keeps his cult following, and Republicans pander to them, the only true liberal/conservative debate will be happening from within the Democratic Party.

When rightwing MODERATES switch AWAY from the GOP that tells me that they have given up all hope that they can still bring it back from the precipice of white supremacist fascism.

It is entirely possible that other prominent members could also decide to follow his lead.

It would only take a couple of GOP Senators to switch to Independent and align with the Dems and that would alter the entire balance of power.

Biden has a lot of friends in the Senate on both sides of the aisle.

He was a part of the Lincoln Project. Before that he was a big shot in the McCain campaign. He sabotaged the Palin VP campaign from within. He was pure establishment who had nothing but contempt for the GOP base. Goodby and good riddance!

As people said about the Trump attack upon Biden's rightful election victory where Trump had the right to attack Biden's victory Steve has the right to say what he thinks.

Palin was one important reason that MCCain lost. The other prominent reason is obvious. The "perfect storm" converged upon MCCain.
Yet MCCain being a man of the highest integrity lost with dignify.

I would rather that good Republican men ( and women) in Congress and in the Republican diaspora stay and fight for what was right and good with the Republican Party.

Agreed but there comes a point where the effort outweighs the potential reward.

Those likeminded moderate conservatives who put the nation BEFORE the party would be better off forming an alliance that drains the remainder of reasonable people away and form what could, for want of a better term, be called the New Republican Party (NRP).

The NRP could then provide Republican voters with the choice between EXTREMIST positions versus sane and reasonable positions that put America first instead.

They haven’t had many chances to say “this didn’t age well” and dozens of threads are being brought back up that show just how completely pathetic and weak their positions are that actually highlight just how well their ideas aged...

It is sad actually, let them have their imaginary victories.

So, he's a globalist. Liberty has no place in the globalist mind. Freedom and globalism don't mix. Globalism and democrats require obedience, not loyalty. Mr Schmidt seems to have publicly acknowledged his real allegiances.

Given that the GOP, the party to which he belonged, has become the POT, a non-fact based group of nihilistic hyper-partisans willing to shred the Constitution to keep Dear Leader in power, what choice did he have?

I, too, believe in fighting the good fight. But the good fight right now is for America, not the GOP.

It is strange, yet predictable why they would switch from democrat to republican at this time. Trump is gone. So any dislike or protest against Trump is meaningless.

It would appear that they are just politicians being politicians. They believe that they stand a better chance of survival as a democrat because they believe the tide has turned in the US. Don't be surprised if they suddenly decide to become republicans if Biden's administration is less than successful.
