This amuses me. Tobacco won't take you to work or return you home. If you are sick and must right now to a hospital, tobacco won't do it. Gasoline will.

Lobbies are so misunderstood and why that is must be due to lack of interest. Each item has a lobbyist for a view. The next one that walks in lobbies for the other side. So congressmen claim they really get a good education from both sides.

I understand lobbies just fine. I'm reading a book right now about political lobbies, and the influence of money. My point is that the lobby groups, like the tobacco lobbies, are paying large sums for false studies, to retain the status quo with energy policy.

Yoiks!! Where does one start when explaining the difference between SOLAR weather and Earth Climate???

Let's start with the bleeding obvious - and that is the source - personally I am always suspicious of any news outlet whose lead story, even eclipsing the Syrian air strikes, is "Girl who lived with Monkeys"

    Which leads me to

DO NOT CONFUSE BAD JOURNALISM WITH GOOD SCIENCE

If the journalist had wanted to write a piece that would have been ignored he would have titled it "possible Maunder Minimum to return" instead he used terms like t mini ice age. Now this is by No means certain so if it does not happen we are still screwed because of rising temps caused by global warming

Frankly, I do not see this as a FOR the energy sector as a FOR the people sector.

Motor fuels are among the safest and most compact fuel sources known. Years ago, other fuels competed and gasoline won out for the automobile. Diesel for large vehicles, trucks and busses to clarify.

This nation has tens of thousands of airplanes still using gasoline. Tens of thousands using jet fuels.

But the scare tactics used by Democrats make me ill.

A good book on the work of the lobbyist is a smart move, so congratulations.

I will agree that oil makes the USA tick. No argument there. This precious resource is also used to manufacture intricate plastic devices, used in all fields, including the medical field. Don't you think we should quit burning up all the world's oil reserves at such a rapid pace, and save some for our future generations?

And now for a more on-topic comment. With all this revenue from all this oil that you talk about, why is the oil industry so afraid of climate change? They invest billions in these misinformation lobbies. Why did they fight Clinton/Gore when they offered matching funds to cities for light rail project construction, which resulted in Light Rail system installations throughout America? Is this the Republican Party, or is it the Gas Overconsumption Party?

Frankly once I would have believed oil companies could be fearful of Democrats who have this idiotic idea they shall save Earth from we heathens.

Shell Oil barged into the alternative energy many years back. And they remained in for a few years. Got back out.

Exxon has a more friendly to Democrats company attitude. I think they do that for politics.

We hear of oil company directing funds to counter climate people, but good solid science can't get countered.

Tell me this nation can't make an A bomb or an H bomb and that gets me to laughing. I don't accept dumb things like that.

Tell me I am destroying Earth and i roll all over laughing.

I want to spend time on rail to help you a bit.

I Earned at the time substantial money off fast rail. I was even managing a job in San Francisco.

So what is my complaint? First, we spent many years building BART. And BART, appears much like the Metro in DC eats up money. And ticket prices are sky high. If you want riders, make prices cheap. I believe in 1962 when I rode the Staten Island Ferry it cost a nickle. Even then that was nothing. Taxis were more expensive. I never rode that ferry after so am not up on prices. BART has some nifty trains. I have used the system enough to get a very good hang of it. But they are chronically low of funds. The passengers face having to spend more to update it and a lot more for tickets. Meanwhile their car sets in a BART parking lot. Some lots have parking fees.

Oil companies can simply buy up the means of production and price as they desire. They don't fear such solutions.

Why not? Alternative energy is very much well below being profitable. And if you want to use solar to turn on your lights, well it will cost you a huge sum of money. Better live in the same home for eons to break even.

For fun, check the prices of the BART fare and contrast that to the wages BART pays. They really pay very high wages.

Can't really comment much on BART. I've never ridden it. I've ridden Light Rail and Commuter Rail in Denver, Los Angeles, Saint Louis, Washington DC, Dallas, New York, Boston and Chicago. I always enjoy riding the rails. Seeing and interacting with people, instead of a dashboard.

I have a 2.8 kW solar PV system, and a 2.4 kW wind turbine. I run a surplus every month, and get a check from the Utility at the end of the year. With the Federal tax credit and State rebates, I believe I'll hit the break-even point in 7 years. If the credits and rebates were not in place, I estimate it would take 11 years. After these break-even periods, it's free energy for a very long time! I should point out that I live in Colorado, with the high mountain sun, and 320 sun-days per year. Wind in the area is rated about 4.25, on a scale of 5. It works very well here, and many people have installed renewables with netmetering.

Don't let me give you the idea I am anti self reliance on energy. I applaud you. But from what I know of both systems, you will pay more to make repairs as time goes on.

I am not out to cause riders to quit rail. But as a one time builder of it, I know the making of the sausage. Since then I have evaluated rail systems. Funny when they go in, taxes go way up. BART is faster due to few stops. But city light rail ought to have far more stops. I have put in little time truly doing a cost analysis on light rail. I can check out the San Jose and Sacramento CA systems to find out more about both.

Typically, solar panels have no maintenance, and continue to produce with no degradation for 20-30 years. Mine are mounted on a pedestal. If mounted on the rooftop, they may have to be moved, when it's time to replace the roof. The wind turbine has moving parts, so I'm a little more concerned. I had an early inverter board problem, that was replaced under warranty. Since then, for over 5 years, no issues. If you have a choice, I recommend solar, as the residential wind turbine market is in disarray, with the bankruptcy of Southwest Wind Energy, the largest manufacturer.

While doing your cost analysis, you may want to the cost analysis for roads. I think you'll find that no transportation system is self-sustaining. Most road expenditures come from either the General Fund (sales tax revenue) or Real Estate or Property Taxes. A fairly small percentage actually comes from fuel tax.

Mathematics is not science. The language of mathematics is used to describe scientific phenomena, or observable events.

Not sure why that was said. I am trying to recall any of my science courses that never used math.

Yes, science USES mathematics. Mathematics is NOT science. Dear god, could it not be any clearer?

So what will we do when the oil runs out; because it will. What are you going to use to make all the things which contain oil in their manufacture?

Starting with the basics, do you understand that oil may be natural to earth?
