I believe because no one witnessed it. They were in a car and no one was around. After five minutes they decided it was a bad idea and stopped. Later the 17 year old told a cop. The cops never saw it. I mean if you drive 80 mph in a 65 MPH zone for five minutes on an empty flat highway and stop because you decide it's not a great idea, if you tell a cop about it 10 minutes later it's unlikely they are going to charge you with a crime.

 

They admitted to the act in public. That is public indecency.

In his state 17 was the legal age of consent, but the issue was that he was engaging in a sex act with a stranger in a public place and got off scott free - I doubt the officers would've been so lenient if he was just an average joe, instead of a state representative. Plus age of consent or not, engaging in lewd acts in public with a 17 year old isn't professional behavior coming from someone elected to represent their state.

If they were caught engaging in public sex they would have been charged. Regardless of the fact that they were not caught, this is just pathetic and vile behavior. I have great difficulty with people who think that public sex is "no big deal". I certainly don't want to see it. It is uncivilized and says something rather sad about his moral character if a married man thinks so little of the sensibilities of his wife and constituents that he would embarrass them before the nation just so he can get a blowjob from a teenager.

It is poorly done on his part, and the defense of this is likewise poor. This is not the America that you would want to raise children in if this goes uncensured. It has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with sensibilities and decorum.

I have friends that will argue this point with me, that I'm being prudish. This scares me. I'm not a prude in the least. So when I am told that by taking the position that I don't want to see people (*)(*)(*)(*)ing in public I am a prude, I realize that the bar of conduct has drastically changed.

I find this frightening.

This hard push for anything goes has actually had the result of sending a lot of my friends back to church because they are frightened about the world their kids are going into. I don't want a highly sexualized world where nothing is taboo and nothing special.

Think about it...rock stars used to be cool and sexy because they were "bad boys". Now they aren't. Their behavior is borderline regular. There isn't even any thrill to being occasionally naughty because naughty has become de rigueur.

Well just because a citizen thinks something is "pathetic and vile" doesn't mean the police state should go out and arrest someone. We have a Constitution in this country. We also have budget constraints and prosecutorial discretion. Heck I've seen people get caught by cops breaking the law and let off with a warning. It's hardly surprising to me that they wouldn't throw the book at someone they didn't even catch who stopped breaking the law of their own free will prior to anyone getting harmed.

Our budget is not unlimited. If people come to their senses before any harm is done I don't think we need to spend hundreds or thousands of tax payer dollars just to make angry people on the internet feel happy about themselves. We have to pick what our priorities are.
