?

Does this man have responsibility to adopt the child his wife had?

  1. Yes, it is the right thing to do, he has a moral obligation to do it

So I guess you do not believe in alimony or child support laws?

~ He needs to get out fast, and move on with his future . Humming the tune ' Billyjean ' would be appropriate.

This will contribute to marriages collapsing.

Definitely not alimony. If people want to agree to a legally-binding financial responsibility to eachother upon divorce, it should be required to be specified in a marriage contract, not the other way around, not when two working parents is the accepted norm. If we go back to a society where one working parent and one 'homemaker' is the expected norm, then alimony laws might make more sense again.

I'm not opposed to child support, as that can be demonstrated to be more of a 'social order' issue than a 'moral' one. I mean, it is also a moral issue, but its not purely a moral issue.

But you believe child support should be based on DNA, not relationship status.

I'm not even sure DNA is necessarily the best metric ...I just havn't thought of a better one. Its in society's best interest to collectively support children because they are the future. The problem is that there isn't any system of authority that can be trusted to enforce such collective support honestly or effectively. That power to 'regulate' others is always misused and abused.

I remember watching one of those trashy TV shows, I think it was Montel Williams - almost a Black version of Jerry Springer - where they would bring a woman in who had a baby and she was demanding child support from a man who she had slept with and the show had done a paternity test.
People would agree to show up on this show because back then DNA tests were very expensive and people from poorer backgrounds could not afford them. Many times the men would agree to come on the show because they were convinced they were not actually the father and wanted to finally get the woman to stop harassing him.
There was one episode where a woman brought in two men, whom she was sure one of them had to be the father. She was devastated and ran off the stage in tears and shame after it was announced neither of those two men were the father.

It was really seen as trashy back then, that these women would go around sleeping with multiple guys and then wind up pregnant and have a baby. Now, it is just seen as "normal". Times have changed.
