    Gary Webb of San Jose Mercury News and Robert Parry of the Associated Press: Cocaine & The Contras

    When San Jose Mercury News reporter Gary Webb exposed CIA "collaboration with and protection of known drug traffickers" (the Contras) to finance the terrorist war in Nicaragua in the series, "DARK ALLIANCE: THE STORY BEHIND THE CRACK EXPLOSION" in 1996, the establishment press reflexively lashed out at Webb and the San Jose Mercury News. The smear campaign was so vicious that it lead to Webb allegedly committing suicide, although some suspect it was an assassination.
