    The first time I heard the phrase used was in 1969.

    POG = Person Other than Grunt.

    It was only spoken never written or printed.

    I have seen it written in books as pogue but it doesn't really matter

    So have I and you weren't the first to point out that it is spelled "pogue."

    Being it has to do with the military and the U.S. military has gone overboard when it comes to acronyms...POG seems appropriate.
