Not too sure I can add to this the cases speak for themselves but I will ask the question

    Fair or unfair?

Rennie Gibbs should not be charged over the death of her child, although she was irresponsible. I hope she gets the help she needs to overcome her addiction.

As for the other girl, Bei Bei Shuai, she should be charged - with what, I do not know. There must be some kind of law that prevents women from harming a viable fetus.
If she was having an abortion, it wouldn't matter, but she tried to kill herself for a foolish reason, and this was the outcome. I would assume Indianapolis has a law which restricts abortion after a certain stage, and deliberately causing the death of a viable fetus might be included.

No I cannot believe that Bei Bei should be charged. Para-suicides have a psychiatric problem - for all we know she might have been in the middle of a psychotic break. She meant to end HER life and lived to see the end of the life of her baby -

    punishment enough I think

Maybe so. But can we excuse every expectant mother to be who acts foolishly or irresponsibly?

Can we afford to prosecute every expectant mother who acts foolishly or irresponsibly?

Of course not, but how many women act foolishly, resulting in the death of a very viable fetus?

You couldn't, and that is why a law would be pointless. I do wish women would be more responsible. I have a friend who is ten weeks pregnant yet she still goes out every Friday and Saturday and gets smashed. I can't help but wonder how (*)(*)(*)(*)ed up the baby will be when it arrives.

Foetal alcohol syndrome but that is different from Peri-natal depression/psychosis

I do not believe that a woman can get so depressed she could kill her child. People have a fair idea when they are depressed, I can't buy that it causes people to kill.

Peri-natal depression and psychosis is a chemical imbalance of the brain. These women are not sad but literally off their heads

Like Andrea Yates, who chased her babies and dragged them into the bathroom, then calmly called police? She planned her crime, that wasn't anything to do with being ill, IMO.

so anyone who has an abortion is simply "foolish"?

Can they not have valid reasons?

Yes she was off her brain and she should never have had that many children with that degree of Puerperal psychosis

Abortion extremely RARELY results in the death of a viable fetus.

if you keep repeating that it may soothe your own conscience but it does not make it fact. A life is snuffed away

    I dunno

why not dig up all the aborted babies and ask them if their mommies had a good reason to kill them

    then get back to me

    lemme see

pre-pregnancy- woman is free to go about her life

pregnancy- now there are 2 lives

post abortion- woman is free to go about her life

    baby-------------is dead

I see the injustice there, don't you?

1.4% of abortions are done at or after 21 weeks, and you have no evidence that those fetuses were viable anyway. Post-viability abortions are illegal almost everywhere except for compelling medical reasons.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Late_termination_of_pregnancy

United States: In 2003, from data collected in those areas that sufficiently reported gestational age, it was found that 6.2% of abortions were conducted from 13 to 15 weeks, 4.2% from 16 to 20 weeks, and 1.4% at or after 21 weeks.

And this is where we find a lack of empathy

Please answer this question - if it were as simple as this - why do women abort?

lemme interview every person who ever had a baby killed and I'll let you know..............sheesh

I have no lack of empathy at all for the life which has been snuffed out.

The fact you condone the termination of a life without any due process, day in court etc simply befuddles me

again OKgrannie, you can continue to try and fool yourself but it does not change the fact that a life has been snuffed out. Why not use the word zygote or fetus a few more times? if it brings back the life then keep using the words

And yet up to 43% of American women will have an abortion

So what would make them do that?
