Folks, I invite you to a discussion about most dominated by gays occupation, I vote for choreographs, and you.
I think, Men: Hairdressers Interior Designers Party Planners Florists Fashion Designers (but of course, gay men can be found in any and every occupation. It's not like there's a law against them doing any job they choose) Harder to pick common careers for lesbians. Other than coaching girls/women's sports, can't really think of a field of business they tend to gravitate toward. Interesting topic, my friend. Hope folks can talk about it without twisting off.
I think I understand what you are asking, Ostap. And it's hairdressers, followed by fashion designers.
Like another poster, I'm having trouble understanding why we're supposed to care what occupations are "dominated" by gay people. Being such a small population, I think it's highly questionable whether it's even possible for gay people to actually dominate any profession. More of them being evident in certain occupations than others isn't the same thing as dominating. In some (professional sports, anyone?), the potential for having your career ruined if you're found out is greater than others.
All depends on how you look at it. I think it's a positive thing that gays are drawn to creative professions. A 'feather in their cap' so to speak. The world needs creative people. Where would we be without gay men in the fashion industry telling women what to wear? Not to mention doing our hair!
My handsome & creative (gay) stepbrother was a florist/event designer. Nobody better than him when it came to original designs. For several years, he did all the flowers for the Dallas Museum of Art... and flowers for the funeral of his 'friend', Greer Garson. When he did a party at her highrise, she was so charmed by him, she spent most of the evening sitting at the kitchen table listening to his stories. Her funeral was spectacular (if there is such a thing). He was quite the creative fellow. Nothing wrong with that.
The doctor I had for four years is gay, his partner for 25 years, an educaton and human resourses specialist. They are also within my circle of firiends but sadly have moved to another developing country for work. Also, if you didn't know them you would never think they are gay,, they are as masculine as any man. So,,, are doctors and education specialists generally gay?
How very patronizing. You want to know why gay people gravitate toward "creative professions"? It's not because we're more talented or creative than straight people. It's because in the "bad old days" they were often the only professions that would have us. Oh, sure you might get somewhere in life if you were totally closeted, but someone would get suspicious sooner or later. It's why so many gay people married heterosexually - "cover marriages" they were called; a means to deflect suspicions that one might be "queer". You really think there would be no one to do your hair or design your clothes without gay people? Ridiculous.
The topic is professions DOMINATED by gays. It's been my experience male hairdressers, florists & designers are gay 90% of the time. Would you like to challenge that statement?
Yes, I would. Now go get us proof. Your anecdotal experience doesn't qualify. And no, naming us a bunch of names of famous people in those professions isn't proof of your assertion either. Anybody can make up some BS stat. Proving it to be true is quite another matter.
Seriously - if 90% of the hairdressers, florists & designers are gay, along with whatever similar statistic you choose to pull out of your ass for whatever other professions you think gay people dominate... Then there are a LOT more gay people than the haters would have us believe. :snap:
It's awfully hard to find statistics... This is the closest I could find. Here are the demographics of a typical cosmetology school: There is nothing special about this school that attracts more women than the average cosmetology school. It stands to reason that the demographics for practicing cosmetologists is not much different for those attending school. So... Even if every male in the cosmetology field were gay, it is still impossible for teh gayz to dominate this profession (unless you seriously think almost half of women cosmetologists are lesbians). Since we are about 2% of the population or so, I find it hard to believe that we could ever outnumber the straights in any profession. The whole thread is silly and perpetuates demeaning stereotypes.
Common knowledge, Perriquine. I don't need a link to prove most male hairdressers are gay because most of the male hairdressers I've had were gay. (Except that hunky guy named Jean-Claude who charged $80 for a consultation.. he was straight but married. Darnit) Feel free to share your personal experiences. Been to many hairdressers?
Republican politicians who are against gay marriage. Christian preachers who are married. NRA executives. Nascar pit crews. Conservative pundits. That is what I think.
I don't need a link to prove that most of the people on the planet are white Christians, because most of the people I've met are white Christians.
