Most macho soldiers and warriors of all time?

In your opinion what soldiers or warriors were the most macho of all time? The Germans of WWII, the Americans of WWII, Aztecs, Incas, Israelis, Mayans, Israelis, Spartans, Romans, Athenians, Persians, Egyptians, Mexicans (a country values machismo but doesn't have a history of it in war), the Russians?

The best soldiers were probably German. Not necessarily macho, but did their job great with loyalty. Grossdeutchsland, Das Riech, and other divisions did great. One Russian soldier admits (or says) they were the best, "even when they were encircled, they still fought excellently". The Aryan Brotherhood are also warriors, accounting for .1% of the prison population but 20% of the homicides. MS-13 are frightening people, and they have a cease fire thing with the AB, because neither wants to lose the manpower in killing each other.

Americans are also great warriors.

The Israelis may be of today, actually probably are.

 

The Roman soldier of the late Republic and Early Empire is something of a goto reference for what a soldier should be throughout the ages. Far from invincible or even fearless he still managed to make and defend the second largest Empire that has ever existed for about 250 years. The Legions were, to a much greater extent than is appreciated, the main explorers of ancient Europe and the major builders of many of Romes's great marvels.

A legionnaire was trained for 8 hours a day, 6 days a week for five years. Ruminate on that when you think boot camp is tough.

 

They won most of their battles. The Persians and Germanic tribes were the only ones to hold off the Romans.

The Israelis also almost completely annihilated two Roman Legios.

The Roman victory to loss ration is extremely positive, like 6-8 to 1 probably.

 

All of the above are macho

 

You forgot the Vikings, the spanish Conquistadors, and the Mongols.

All of which have ruthless machismo.

 

No holy orders? Janissaries? Gurkhas? Cataphracts? Normans? Huns?

Gurkhas was the group I was looking for. And WWI British forces. This is the worst poll ever.

 

Vikings are my type of warrior according to two personality tests I took. I have the fighting style of them, short, ferociously intense fighters. The conquistadors not so much, the mongols were psychopaths. The Vikings were macho, even the Romans thought so.

 

Also forgot the Ottomans.

The Scots have provided some of the best fighting men since then. The BEF in WW1 put up such a wall of fire Germans thought they were walking into machine guns rather than rifle fire!

 

The Germans stalemated France and the UK and were OUTNUMBERED during WW1 also fighting the Russians. They were winning up until the American intervention.

British and German troops were about equal in a 1 to 1 fight or 10 to 10 fight

What they do in prison is scary. Be black in prison with them. Then tell me they are not badass

 

The BEF were massively outnumbered in the first few months of the war, they fought the Germans to a standstill and stopped the quick victory Germany had hoped for, I suggest you look at some history books!

I kind of get you. When it comes to killing ability and fighting ability the AB is unmatched in prision (perhaps the world) though

The Vikings are arguably the least sadistically bloodthirsty of the three I mentioned, but brutal anyway.

I wish I could remember the name of the documentary I saw which focused on the unification of Norway and the berserkers role in it. Berserkers were maybe the first extremely effective elite cadre. A relatively small group of them were responsible for a huge amount of carnage.

Conquistadores and Mongols had a reputation of mercilessness that IMO would make them as macho as any on your list.

I didn't include religious groups like the Crusaders and the Nizari Ismailis. Because despite being quite effective their sense of purpose was directed by strict religious belief. Nothing macho about that.

They are neither soldiers nor warriors. Well... I never did expect neo-nazis or their sympathizers to be intelligent.
