Most polls show that nurses are the most trusted and respected professionals. I think perhaps instead of doctor and first responder you could make it health care provider or list nurses as well

Yeah, I should've put nurses and doctors in a single category.

I also forgot to put those in the financial industry (bankers, consultants, investors, etc...)

You put up some tough choices. As an X-cop, obviously I'm going to be prejudiced. I respect law enforcement overall, though I do have difficulty justifying the actions we're hearing about recently. Firefighters and doctors/nurses have earned my respect many times over in extremely hazardous situations. The rest are so-so, however, lawyers should never be mentioned in any subject regarding respect-remember, lawyers turn into politicians!
    Enjoy!

You respect firefighters and police over intelligence officers?

Does the selectivity of each job factor into anybody's choice?

Intel officers are important, but they're not out there on the front lines, unless you're using a Bond type as an example. By and large, intel officers do their thing inside, a large part of what they do is by electronic and photographic information. This does not necessarily mean they are not needed, just that for the most part they aren't laying their lives on the line to get the job done. All in all, I do respect anyone who is contributing to the safety and welfare of Americans. And I apologize for not including the military in my original choices.
    Enjoy!

I guess I just naturally defaulted to those specializing in HUMINT, the James Bond types...

    Thanks Hollywood ;)

Here are professions that have stink on them:

Law enforcement: a militarized, heavy handed approach by the police force, as well as abuse of power like civil asset forfeiture law have lost the trust of the average citizen.

Medical professionals: they are too sciency. They tell you to get your child vaccinated and people ask them why do they hate children.

Pro athlete: everyone loves them until they sign with another team for more money.

Singer: everybody LOVES Justin Bieber, right? :blankstare:

I could find a flaw in all of them...except one. The only profession that nobody ever complains about.

    Masseuse.

You don't have minister/priest/rabbi/mullah on your list. Not that I respect them, either. Otherwise, I'm with Mike Rowe; anybody who takes on the dirty jobs has my respect.

I need more people to weigh in on this--going through a mid-life crisis (not really) and considering switching to one of these careers (not that I have the talent), so please answer the question. Thanks
