I have been there a couple of times.. They do look like hoof prints but who knows. The point of this thread is that before Herod expanded the temple mount is was much smaller. It was basically the eastern ridge. The dates of the expansion when those HUGE stones were laid was 21 BC (must check the date) and that was the Roman garrison which also included a Roman bakery.. It should also be noted that there wasn't a whole legion in Jerusalem in Jerusalem... most were stationed in Syria... so only 600 were in Jerusalem and they were foot soldiers.
