The comments came after Foreign Minister Julie Bishop earlier this week said on the ABC's AM program that North Korea's nuclear weapons program posed a "serious threat" to Australia unless it was stopped by the international community.

A spokesman for the North Korean Foreign Ministry accused Australia of "spouting a string of rubbish" about the isolated regime, and warned against following the US.

"The present Government of Australia is blindly and zealously toeing the US line," the spokesman said.

"If Australia persists in following the US' moves to isolate and stifle North Korea … this will be a suicidal act of coming within the range of the nuclear strike of the strategic force of North Korea."

The North Korean Foreign Ministry also directly addressed Ms Bishop's interview, warning she had "better think twice about the consequences to be entailed by her reckless tongue-lashing before flattering the US".

Even RT is reporting this one. :D

    https://www.rt.com/news/385720-north-korea-australia-threat

North Korea has warned Australia of a possible nuclear strike if it continues to "blindly and zealously toe the US line." It comes after Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said Pyongyang poses a "serious threat" to peace and stability in the region.
"If Australia persists in following the US moves to isolate and stifle the DPRK and remains a shock brigade of the US master, this will be a suicidal act of coming within the range of the nuclear strike of the strategic force of the DPRK," a spokesman for the North Korean Foreign Ministry said, as quoted by the official KCNA news agency.

The threat comes after Bishop said earlier this week that North Korea is on a "path to achieving nuclear weapons capability," posing an "unacceptable" risk to the region. She added that its efforts must be stopped by the international community.

Those comments were not taken well by North Korea, with the spokesman referring to them as a "string of rubbish.”

And I've been told by certain posters on this site that North Korea is no different than any other nation that wishes to defend itself from outside threats. They infer that NK is a perfectly rational actor. This was the threat of a nuclear strike because of .... words.

Australia doesn't have a choice, it's signatory to the actual armistice signed in Korea after the war, and we'd probably also be obligated to help defend South Korea through the UN Charter

What do you think about the whole mess? Is it time to head in and take little Kim and friends out? All I know if I'd like for that stupid little regime to be gone and for Korea to find peace and, hopefully, reunification. I can't help but think about Germany's reunification and how similar the situation appears here.

My main concern was a confrontation with China, now that they are onboard I'm not as concerned however still glad not to be on the Korean Peninsula.

I think the recent failures to detonate their missiles was sabotage, not cyber interference as allude to by the CIA. I would assume China likely have infiltrated his nuclear program and have ears on the ground in Pyongyang. As a previous NK ally China is better placed than anyone in dealing with this and therefore I would like to see them take the lead on this not the US.

Interesting. Yes, it would be nice to see China take a proactive role in this, now that you mention it.

I think the Chinese will be able to defuse much of the antagonism that exists between the US and Pyongyang, and they should be given an opportunity to resolve this first before the US barges in with it's war talk. I don't think they can control Kim Jong Un any more than Washington can but perhaps if given the opportunity to save face he will make some concessions that will save millions of lives.

North Korea abrogated the Armistice. The UN Charter is not like the NATO Charter obligating members to come to the assistance of a NATO-member under attack.

North Korea declares 1953 armistice invalid
    By Madison Park, CNN
Updated 1:07 PM ET, Mon March 11, 2013

The North Korean army has declared invalid the armistice agreement that ended the Korean War in 1953, the official newspaper of the country's ruling Workers' Party said Monday.

The current strategy of the US threatening Kim Jong Un is placing millions of lives at risk, I believe some cooler heads are called for and the Chinese past relationship with NK should be utilised to try and rid the Korean Peninsula of a nuclear threat. Unification should not be on the table as it will only aggravate Kim Jong Un.

On the other side, that inhuman little regime will endure. It seems many people have been killed for stupid reasons and many others defect, not always successfully.

I also wonder just how deadly the war option would actually end up being.

I still believe that North Korea is only bluffing about their nuclear capabilities. The real concern is non-nuclear ballistic missiles which could reach many countries in the Asia-Pacific region and North Korea is fully capable of striking Tokyo, while Australia may not be within reach. The Taepodong-2 that could potentially reach Australia is not actually operational yet. The US may need to take down hundreds of ballistic missile launch bases at the same time to prevent that from happening.
