What a sanctimonius prig. He says he has been in their shoes. His record sucks.

President Barack Obama went after the college vote Tuesday, pitching cheaper student loans as he courted the one age group where he has a decided advantage over Republican rival Mitt Romney. The twist? Romney, too, has endorsed the idea, though it's unclear whether deficit-leery Republicans in Congress will go along.

In the race for the White House, both the Obama and Romney campaigns see huge opportunities to court younger voters. This week, their efforts are focused on the millions of students — and their parents — who are grappling with college costs at a time when such debt has grown so staggering it exceeds the totals for credit cards or auto loans.

Trying to make it personal, Obama told students at the University of North Carolina that he and first lady Michelle Obama had "been in your shoes" and didn't pay off their student loans until eight years ago.

"I didn't just read about this. I didn't just get some talking points about this. I didn't just get a policy briefing on this," Obama said. "We didn't come from wealthy families. When we graduated from college and law school, we had a mountain of debt. When we married, we got poor together."

Obama's emphasis on his personal experience set up a contrast with Romney, whose father was a wealthy auto executive. It's a point the president is sure to return to during this summer's campaigning.

Though both Obama and Romney have expressed support for freezing the current interest rates on the loans for poorer and middle-class students, lawmakers are still exploring ways to pay for the plan. The timing is important because the rate will double from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent on July 1 without intervention by Congress, an expiration date chosen in 2007 when a Democratic Congress voted to chop the rate in half.

Obama has claimed many times that he was going to address the student loan issue and even hold university's responsible if they didn't keep fee's in check.

To date, not one single piece of legislation has come out of his administration to address this problem. He is lying simply to get their vote and its so obvious its laughing. I'd say its time to give someone else a chance to tackle this problem since Obama has shown that he has no desire to do anything except talk about it.

    He is a horrible President.

He really is. He heard the horror report - that the graduating college students this year have no jobs to go to or scant job offers. He can't and won't provide more jobs, but he'll pimp again for their vote this election year addressing student loans.

To run on a record you have to have a record. So far his record is that of failure from the economy to international affairs. So what is left is to inject fear and lies, and oddly enough, many millions of Americans are falling for it. if he gets re-elected and starts his true path toward a social;ist nation, those very supporters will be screaming the loudest.

Isn't it disgusting how these jokers spout their lies out of their mouths just to get your vote, knowing their kids will NEVER, EVER, have to worry about paying college tuition.

From reading your posts.. I would think a person with your point of view would relish the fact that the government does nothing to pay your way or reduce your voluntarily assumed debt. The government should stay out of education right? leave that to the States... or better yet let the people who can afford college to pay for college.... why the hell should my tax dollars go to paying for your education?

As far as Obama promising one thing and doing another... how the hell are any of you shocked? Thats the M.O of all politicians... republican and democrat.

that was already tried and failed; most sane, educated people don't want to go back to the way it was in 1911

Obama's political posturing may be negated by "regulatory uncertainties"...

Student Loan Rates May Rise Regardless of Politics: Fitch
4/30/12 --- Both President Obama and Republican party standard-bearer Mitt Romney support extending low-interest rate student loans. But regardless of whether that happens, student loans could still wind up being more expensive.

You are right and Obama knows this , he just likes to spout pretty words to the students. to get them out to vote for him
Typical Chicago style politician, getting re-elected is everything; he has no guilt in getting students in believeing his lies. I'm sure there are quite a few that see through this.
