Scientists had to figure out what was going on with people who were getting sick with symptomes that initially appeard to be flu. This is not an easy problem.

They also had to determine how the disease was transmitted. Did it come from the market? Was it in the water? This was not an easy question either, as this virus can be communicated from human to human a couple weeks before symptoms appeared.

By mid January that were able to give us the genome so we could identify it in labs.

The labs we supported were able to do that kind of work.

Also, they were able to overcome the local political pressure to keep it hidden. They KNEW what they had and did not put up with the coverup. When the CCP found out, they didn't put up with the coverup, either.
