Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed (*)(*)(*)(*)ing comments by US President Barack Obama on Israels settlement policy. The heated rhetoric may signal a split in Israel-US relations, as Netanyahu is expected to win his countrys upcoming elections. Everyone understands only Israelis will determine who faithfully represents Israels vital interests, Netanyahu said during a visit to the Israel Defense Forces Gaza division. He emphasized that the US sought for Israel to restrain our pressure on Iran, withdraw to the 1967 lines, divide Jerusalem and cease construction in Jerusalem. Shrugging off US influence, Netanyahu said that Israel had fended off those pressures. The Israeli Prime Ministers comments came after American political commentator Jeffrey Goldberg published a blog post on Bloomberg on Obamas response to Israels announcement it will build thousands of homes in the West Bank. Obama said privately and repeatedly that Israel doesnt know what its own best interests are, Goldberg wrote, quoting Obama. With each new settlement announcement, Netanyahu is moving his country down a path toward near-total isolation. Following the UNs recognition of Palestine as a non-member observer state last year, Netanyahu announced plans to build 4,000 housing units in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The plans provoked international condemnation by human rights groups and world governments. The US voted against Palestines bid for de facto statehood in the UN General Assembly, but Goldberg warned in his blog that in the future, Israel may not be able to rely on US support and vetoes in the UN. Members of Netanyahus Likud party were enraged by the US presidents comments, condemning them as gross interference and a US attempt to meddle in the upcoming Israeli elections. Netanyahu and Obama came close to diplomatic blows on a number of occasions over how to deal with Irans nuclear program. Obama has sought to defuse Netanyahus aggression towards Israels rival, and has preferred to ratchet up pressure on Tehran through financial sanctions. Obama is not hiding his displeasure and is attacking Benjamin Netanyahu's policy from every direction. However, I'm convinced he will get along with a Netanyahu who stands up for his principles. He has no other choice. The easiest thing for Netanyahu would be to become the darling of the international community. Such a goal would be very easy to achieve. Clinton worshipped Ehud Barak for offering the Golan Heights to Syria and Jerusalem to Arafat. Rabin and Peres were also admired in Europe because of the Oslo Accords. We even got the Nobel Prize, along with murderous suicide terror. The disengagement from Gaza helped Arik Sharon a lot in his dealings with the Bush Administration and the press, which forgave him for the Greek island affair after he swung to the Left It was a pleasure traveling the world as prime minister back then, but it was very difficult to travel within Israel, as the disengagement brought rocket terror to the south, and the last withdrawals brought terror to the heart of Israel's cities; ruthless terror that was a direct result of Israeli concessions, which only proved there is no one on the other side who will agree to peace. It's entire purpose was to demonstrate that the other side of being the "darling" of the world is to put Israel in danger and subject it to terror, wars and rocket attacks. While previous Israeli leaders were "darlings", rockets were falling on Israeli towns and suicide bombers were blowing up busses, restaurants and malls. Duh!
