This aught to (*)(*)(*)(*) off a lot of Republicans

President Barack Obama is touting a new series of green-tech subsidies in North Carolina Wednesday, simultaneously trying to goose his prospects in the swing-state and to jump-start his stalled plan to minimize the nation’s use of gasoline.

The new subsidies include an expansion of the $7,500 subsidy for the wealthy buyers of the Chevy Volt.

If Congress approves Obama’s proposal, the government will be giving $10,000 in taxpayer money to people wealthy enough to buy novel green-tech autos that are powered by batteries or natural-gas.

The new $10,000 credit, according to a White House statement, should “be applied to additional types of technologies, not currently covered.”

The average household income of Chevy Volt buyers is $170,000. White House officials did not estimate the total cost to taxpayers of the proposed subsidy, which will also be given by buyers of commercial trucks.

Obama also announced a new tax break to spur purchase of trucks powered by natural gas when he visits a factory run by Daimler Trucks North America in Mt. Holly, N.C. “This incentive… drive up demand for the sorts of vehicles built at Freightliner’s Mt. Holly Plant and, in turn, spur job creation in the American manufacturing sector,” said a press release.

The visit and the subsidies may help Obama gain ground in North Carolina, which he won by 0.3 percent in 2008.

Why is the Government subsidizing this car purchase? Can anyone explain how we got to this point in America? This has been a bad, bad dream.

It's more than just this car. It's all energy efficient cars. And I would think the point would be obvious? To reduce dependency on foreign oil. Which is a national security risk.

So it helps the environment. Increases car sales thus creating jobs. AND it helps our national security interest.

WELL worth our tax dollars if you ask me.

The only question is why aren't we subsidizing this even more?

It's really scary that there are people in this country who think this kind of nonsense actually makes sense.

It doesn't help the environment. Hybrid cars require parts that are more toxic to the environment than simple gasoline. It's not increasing car sales. GM just closed down a Volt plant because the car is not selling. There are not viable alternatives to oil at this point, and the Volt is evidence of that.

Obama's green energy policy is starting to weigh him down. Its failing on all levels and making him look ineffective.

Definetly an albatross around his neck.

    More GM bailouts.

    subsidies just increase the price.

if thr car is not selling, too bad! design a better, more affordable car.

let GM take the hit and sell the volt at a discount until they hit a price consumers will buy it.

im tired of this truly fascist government redistributing wealth to failed companies.

    its totally wrong.

once again, subsidies just increase the price.

    supply and demand.

if the supply of money for buyers increases, the price of the volt will also increase or not descrease as it should.

subsidies just make electric cars more expensive!

    this is wrong.

The environment is doing just fine without Der Furher and his electric ObamaMobile.

We don't need to give a $10,000 taxpayer windfall to rich, tree-hugging Obama voters.

Why do socialists always see government "creating jobs" but never see that they have to tax the private sector to pay for it, which DESTROYS more net jobs due to inefficiency and waste in government spending on jobs.

    GOVERNMENT HAS NO MONEY

all the money used to "create new jobs" was taken from the more efficient private sector.

so basically for every one public sector job created, AT LEAST one private sector one was lost, ususlly more.

I wouldn't go for the $10k. I'm holding out for an exemption from Obamacare for folks who buy a Volt.

Is that a real issue for you personally, living in Mexico?
