We do not cling to any beliefs. Show us evidence to the contrary and we will change our minds.

This is far removed from the religious belief that the earth is several thousand years old, even in light of the evidence to suggest otherwise. So no, it is not a valid comparison.

Artistic representation of our hidden self. They are evil looking, wicked... Like all men were supposed to be at that time, according to religion. They were also put outside of the churches to show that the physical world was filled with vice and dangers. The only salvation from their torment came from within the church.

The original gargoyle was a "dragon"which, as Nosferax, states, was turned into a symbol of evil by the church.
    Interesting read:

The First Fossil Hunters: Paleontology in Greek and Roman Times. Adrienne Mayor. xx + 361 pp. Princeton University Press, 2000. $35.00.

    In Google books

If I recall correctly the chinese before they were aware of what dinosaur bones were used to refer to dinosaur fossils in the Chinese equivalent as "dragon bones"...no doubt a typical reaction of many societies when they found bones of fantastic huge creatures that no one could identify..around which entire mythologies would spring up explaining these discoveries...

so americans only have uneducated texans to worry about we (canadians) have a PM who believes the world is 6K years old and our Minister of science and technology does as well...imagine what's like being a government employed scientist and all announcements/ research findings must be vetted through the minister of science first!...one geologists research confirmed there was a gigantic lake in Canada 13K ago an obvious disagreement with his bosses 6K belief, he was denied permission to reveal his findings...that privilege fell to an american scientist who worked on the research, he had no obligation to canada's minister of science to keep his mouth shut...

Yes, That is what Adrienne Mayor hypothesizes. She has found considerable evidence in Greece and North America to back her conclusions.

Except this isn't how canada works... The government doesn't even control the media outlet that he himself own, the CBC and Radio-Canada. Those two media outlet have embarassed every single government since their first broadcast by releasing to the public documents and uncovering plots. Add in the mix the privatelly own media like Quebecor, who deal mainly in trash journalism and you get a very paranoid government.

There is also the fact that our culture doesn't encourage blind loyalty to the state. So their own employee are the one leaking the obscure memo or "forgetting" the box of files on a metro bench...

    Ask the Liberals about it...

Pfft. Scientists/Mythologies. They all still dispute the existence of mother-in-laws during the Middle Paleolithic...simply because they haven't recovered any uncrushed skulls.

=O Oh my, I am Texan and I know we didn't exist during the time of the dinosaurs!! We wouldn't have fit in very well there...

I like to think my hometown (the Capital, ATX) is immune to these type of backward hillbillies. And it DOES scare me that TX dictates the production of text books, especially history.

Not possible. You are a refreshingly eloquent bright light (/shudder, for a leftie) for someone so young, and would be easily spotted.

LOL, I actually thought the joke was very good - I envy you your wit - but I coudn't resist the temptation - sorry. I also envy you your maturity and self-confidence - there are those who unhumorously trot out the 'grammar-Nazi' appellation at the gentlest prompt.
